Hi all, been meaning to ask this for some time:

When I stop after running for a while ie: at lights or somewhere, my engine is rather noisey.
It sounds like something is broken and banging together, I thought at first it might be the exhaust heat shield, but it sounds further back and to the off side. I haven't been able to nail it down yet but it just sounds a god awful racket when I stop.
When I am driving it's fine, no noises. If I accelerate the engine it rev's up with no fuss, only to rattle on tick over again.
It doesn't burn any oil and the rest of the drivetrain give no undue noises.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi George from what you describe I would look at the crank pulley which is the one that drives the auxilary belt. This has a metal inner and outer pulley which is laminated with rubber. Over time the rubber wears out, giving the tickover rattle that you have desceibed. I changed mine recently after it sounded like someone was rattling a bag of spanners! To diagnose it you simply remove the belt and start the engine.

Yeah, looks like I'm going to have to do somethin about the crank pulley.

So, c'mon guys where do I get the noo bit from?

Knackers yard? Might be as bad as the one I'm replacing.

Any idea's? OEM will costabomb won't it?

P/S bought noo belt , pump and rollers - so when i do the racket i'll renew it all in one go - then it'll breakdown lol...

I bought mine from ebay earlier in the year, from a French seller, and I paid £34 including the postage, it was a doddle to fit, and made a massive difference to the ride. I searched for multipla crank pulley and found it from there. I think it's the same part on all diesels so there is no need to worry about compatibility issues.

Yeah, I'm a great believer in the 'do it once' mind set. I bought a timing belt set and water pump, alternator belt, alternator and a new jockey wheel.
Let's face it, it's gonna be a sod to do so best do everything in that area and be done with it. Gonna check the alternator too, I've been told to look for cracks that can cause failure of the unit, and it will be more accessible with 'harf the ingin missin'. :rolleyes:

J.A: Can you think of the French chaps name for the pulley, pls?.

Anyone with leads to a rear subframe (drum brake type) thats lookin for a new home, gis a nod, cheers.

Alternator . . .

Mind you, from the time I found that, to when the Alternator finally died, was about 2 1/2 years and over 40,000 miles, so can't complain.

But personally I'd give them a miss. This guy does genuine Gates (reputable make) ones:

A lot more expensive but cheaper than most places for that make.

I think you'll find that all of the subframes are the same, regardless of whether it's disc or drum brake. Fiat delaers offered a disc-to-drum conversion for a while for people who had problems with the disc brake set up and I know they didn't replace the subframe. I've got a feeling that even the swing arms are the same, though the ABS and non-ABS ones differ, probably only insofar as the diameter of the stub axle.

Hi George, I've just checked. The seller is mister-auto-uk on ebay, and once you've found him, search his store for a multipla pulley, 32.04 gbp as of now. An ebay search doesn't find it, but it will if you find him first. 9 months on and no problems with the pulley. it is a bolk branded item.

WMF: Thanks bud, I thought that was the case. Just gorra find a good un. I want to swap to drums, even with that poxy adjuster they're better than the disc setup.
