Punto (Mk2/2b) Meet Bumble-Bee

Introduction

Meet Bumble bee
replacing my beloved but now scrapped Mk2 Blue punto

Needs some bits doing to it - but i never leave cars alone anyway :)

So here he is
2004 on a 53 plate
58K
Yellow Active Sport (8v engine)
Alloys - nice grey interior and generally nice tidy motor that needs a little more tlc to make him better :)

Dealer 4 (no plate).jpg

So what has been done so far? Well its got a fairly new backbox - but middle pipe went, replaced under its warrenty

Given him a darn good clean and wash, but lasts all of 5 mins been yellow :(

Pulled all the roof gutter seals out and cleaned the rubbish out from there
Also had the windows screen trim rubber and cleaned all around there :)

what i wanna do is get everything cleaned up, tidy alot up
add a few features i want back in :)

But here we go :)

So i did the roof gutters - they were really really ready.... which means all the cack runs down the rear lights.....

So out they come

1hr later they are all cleaned - dried and waxed to prevent it getting bad anytime soon

Having read this thread from start to finish (first time i had read it) i have to say Ziggy full credit to you, you have a fantastic example and have inspired myself to carry out some similar cleaning jobs. Cheers.

Well another busy day

The Backside has been hit with some elbow grease

Rear bumper off
Backbox off
Rear backbox heatshield off - well that weren't attached all to well

And onto scrubbing!!
And one soggy floor = 1 soggy me

But underside been cleaned

After using a wire wheel on the little rusty bits
Rust killer
Primer x1
paint x1
+ 1 undercoat = this :)

Spot the missed patch....

Removed the exhaust to get better access, plus modified it to stop it banging everywhere

removed the hanger because that was trapping some undershield that had attacked the chassis rail there and started to rust

So wire wheeled the mount too and and waxy'd that too!

2 bits of waxy stuck together should repel water easily :)

missed that 1 bolt to clean it up - oh well

Had a play without a backbox, the noise is fab!

Anyway to be legal i put it back on :(

Ziggy

Ziggy was just wondering mate how do you take of the back bumper! Really wouldn't mind doing this to my car:)

Thanks Rhys:)

Well underseal has ground to a hoult

Time - Money - Injury, so im not able to work as easily

The punto tho has been begging for time from me by deciding todo this!
Wiper disconnected.jpg

So a Halfords Washer box set - Some suitable screws from B&Q, and an afternoon borrowing a pillar drill, i repaired my washer linkage set :)
Wiper repaired.jpg

When the linkage is more playful, i will fit a wipex kit, but i couldnt wait for a repair kit to arrive, so it was bodge job fix thats pulled me through :) works a dime tho!!

Next the beloved backbox bang, moved it - still banged made worse
Melted bumper a little bit.... great

Remove backbox, chopped 5mm-7mm off the prongs, a little better

Ordered a new hanger from Euro-Car-Parts, only £1.85 cant complain :)
New vs Old.jpg
Old Cracked.jpg
When the backbox was on this hanger, it was sloppy, so it made more sense to replace it
its better but not perfect Need todo some testing

New hanger in place.jpg
Next is showing the new hanger in place and the chopped legs, still plenty off meat still, but moves it away from the hangers at the back :)

Noticed my car has used some oil - only about 2mm on the dipstick, but now i know why....
3 leaks which are only getting worse...
Cam cover
Cam cover leaking worse.jpg

Coil pack
Coil pack leaking badly.jpg

And the sumps leaking too, all little dribbles but soon add up!
Need a new sump anyway, its shagged

After driving the Mrs car, and moving my mums, i know my handbrake is weak...
So i made it better, but its still crap....
A good score of the shoes and drums to remove the shine/glaze
Reset the adjusters, cleaned all the friction spots and copper-grease the slip points to make the rear drums work!
And they do on the foot pedal - firmer pedal, but the handbrake is still crap, cant make it lock the wheels up....

Mind you tho
Mk2b and mk2 washer yets arent interchangeable...
Weird huh? the mk2 have a fatter lug set
The mk2b mist spray are okay for getting good coverage, if they were adjustable.... mine sprayed on the roof more then the screen

So some scrappy mk2 washers cut down a little bit and hey presto :) they fit! and the screen can be washed!

Well a movement on the undersealing storey

I heard that taking the Fuel pipe work out was easy (HA! )

Corroded screws and fun galore!!

Eitherway - i was sick of the fact everytime you tapped the fuel pipes or caught them you were showered in muck

Dirt on floor.jpg
for the past few days i've been knocking the pipework to loosen it off
Lets put it this way - its baked on well!

Dirty Fuel Pipes.jpg

So on with the cleaning, spending ages knocking off lumps of crud and dirt, the wheel arch was literally a holding cell for it....
Cleaned Pipe work.jpg
But non the less - the wheel arch's were cleaned, but tar spots remained, no biggie
Tar Spotted byt clean.jpg

Not much rust - caught it nice and early i think

Wire wheel and 80grit paper where the drill cant reach
Soon gets rid of it all :)

Rusty Fuel pipe holder.jpgTiny Rust spot.jpgTiny Spots of rust.jpg

Once it was cleaned off, treated with rust killer, primered, painted 2 coats of yellow

All left to dry

Then using Waxyoil attacked it all again

However.... i ran out, went to halfords brought some more, or so i thought....
Instead i managed to get stone chip :bang:

So its 90% Waxyoil
10% where i missed

Refitting the pipes i knocked and smudged loads
So the whole thing got sort of topped off with stone chip again to patch it up

Looks good enough

Treated Arch B.jpg
Treated Arch C.jpg

I took advantage of pouring petrol in my trainers.... clever me...

But also tackling the seat belt bolts while access was good incase i had problems
But since i've had them out before, no problems
Removed the bolts - cleaned with wire wheel, copper grease on refitting and done :)

All for a Day there folks!

college soon, gonna start running out of time / struggle for time! But it will all be done!!

Stay tuned!

Ziggy

I wish! NOT

I hate doing it!

Still got 3x wheel archs and 2 sections of floor todo!

THEN still gotta do the mrs's car! luckily its very small and there isn't crappy pipework everywhere :)

Ziggy

Would beer tokens persuade you?;)

I mean I need to tackle mine before the bitter weather comes, but no one to help me, yeah one person can do it fine, but two people makes it a breeze of a job! :)

Looking great @Ziggy122 ! (y)

Feel free to come do mine ;)

Ben

Dont drink :p

It'd be 10x easier if you could get the car up on a ramp, drop everything like exhaust and fuel tank on floor / out way

Get the whole underside washed - cleaned and then underspray

But it'd make an aweful mess....

your rear arches are in really nice condition, beautiful.

The bit you've highlighted as tiny spot of rust is where they start to go, there's a fold / weld in the metal there that just catches the water. Mine sort of came to bits at that point with wire brushing. Sympathetic mash with the hammer soon added a new nice rolled edge:)

That's a nice job, you're nailing it nice and early, you should get plenty of life out of that

Amazing how much top soil gets stuck round that area!

Saying i drive on what appears to be clean roads

i bet its winters fault

That stuff there was bone Dry crispy as a rock.... So it piled high in winter - dried solid in summer!

I thought i had a hole, but just rust

Well the storey is slow moving again
Money / college / life to blame

Anyway - The underside is SEALED! :D
The Tank filler arch is sealed

Just 3x arch's todo, then front bumper off to tackle an eye sore
But

The over due front mudflaps
There suttle and worth it hopefully :) The clips were 10x easier to work with as well
Will hopefully reduce underside abuse and side spray :) And im helping keep the spray down for you road users :) plenty of +'s

For reference to people, SG Petch a parts dealer online - brought through there website and paid about £25 - £30 IIRC

Anyway pictures

As many other people are doing, I'm loving your Bumblebee's colour (y). Really nice in yellow haha. I like that like sunburst orange that I've seen a few mk2s in too.

The yellow is a signiture to a sporting model of punto tbh
Once in your life you have to have a yellow sporting Fiat :) Classic Broom yellow

The Mk2 orange i dont like overly much, the Grande punto orange tho - I LOVE :yum:

I will probably have to move to a grande next because punto's are unfortunatly a dying breed :(

But dont worry - bumblee-bee will be here for some time yet tho!

I have done a little work recently tho

He's had a different battery put in
He's had his Alternator to starter connectors cleaned
The Alternator to battery connections cleaned too!

Its helped that little bit with the sudden drops of power, the alternator is now atleast recharging or maintain voltage with a few rev's not sat there struggling as much

Yeah, I think the Grande is really nice. If I had the money I would be driving one lol. With alloys of course.
