Punto (Mk2/2b) Meet Bumble-Bee

Introduction

Meet Bumble bee
replacing my beloved but now scrapped Mk2 Blue punto

Needs some bits doing to it - but i never leave cars alone anyway :)

So here he is
2004 on a 53 plate
58K
Yellow Active Sport (8v engine)
Alloys - nice grey interior and generally nice tidy motor that needs a little more tlc to make him better :)

Dealer 4 (no plate).jpg

So what has been done so far? Well its got a fairly new backbox - but middle pipe went, replaced under its warrenty

Given him a darn good clean and wash, but lasts all of 5 mins been yellow :(

Pulled all the roof gutter seals out and cleaned the rubbish out from there
Also had the windows screen trim rubber and cleaned all around there :)

what i wanna do is get everything cleaned up, tidy alot up
add a few features i want back in :)

But here we go :)

So i did the roof gutters - they were really really ready.... which means all the cack runs down the rear lights.....

So out they come

1hr later they are all cleaned - dried and waxed to prevent it getting bad anytime soon

and a demagnetised screwdriver for the hose clips:rolleyes:

Well aside from the fact that deionised water doesn't contain lime scale to fur up the insides of the radiator, it also lacks dissolved sodium and other mineral ions which increase the electrical conductivity of the water resulting in electrolytic reactions between the metal components of the engine and the coolant.

So firm reasoning for not using tap water, not sure of the benefits of using a demagnetised screw driver? Best i could come up with is magnetism is witch craft so best avoid ? (y)

Well Not much has happened to be honest only a few tiny updates

Didnt like the Toyo 350's - they were pulled off

The rear Multihawks went onto the front
The rear then had some nice Uni-Royal MS plus 6 winter tyres (apline symboled)

The grip level has been restored, i feel more confident with braking, the back isn't trying to slide away - Happy swap in my eyes

Christmas the DRL's arrived

The Lights - im very happy with!
The Switching Unit - Not so happy with, not happy with my current wiring setup - safe(double fused) but not good enough for me

Alloys had a morning of been scrubbed and cleaned, although its better - not perfect

So whats next for the car?

Rewire the DRL's
Prepare wiring for the Cig Socket for the boot
Prepare wiring for sub in boot
Possibly add a spare wire in for a revesing sensor kit :yum:
Underseal - Not till the weather is better tho
Swap back to alloys in Summer
Silver stereo Surround and Speedo surround
CC'd wing mirrors?
And last but not least - Mark up the 30/50/70/90 on my speedo hopefully with some sort of fluresent paint

Ziggy

Well progress has been slow to be honest

Whats happened then

- Well the subwoofer is wired up finally! works a treat!
- Reverse sensor kit is installed and working okay, had a few days where it didnt but im monitoring that
- Swapped to alloys again, love and hate them
Love the looks, hate the wheel shake and crap tyres :(
- Tried todo a steel wheel basic refurb :) Aim not to be perfect, but hella lot better

Pictures :)
So this is what the rims look like

lots of flakey rubbish, believe it or not these have been scrubbed clean already!

So after a good wire wheel session, rims treated to a coat of rust killing gel
DSCF0967.JPG

Primered lightly, as i didnt have alot, the rust killer is also a primer layer
DSCF0968.JPG

and the results aren't too bad!
Not 100%, but i dont want perfect, they'll be destroyed by winter in years to come so no major worry to be honest

Yes there are some runs, due to a low level it sprays poorly and you get a run, but im happy with the dramatic improvement!

only got 3 more rims todo!

Some reason i haven't updated alot of things....

Eitherway
Just had an oil + oil filter change :) 5k since last, it wasn't bad, but i want to keep it in good condition :)

Air filter was changed again, cheap as chips, wasn't bad looking, but again i want to keep it good looking

Front brake pads
2013-05-03 11.33.01.jpg
Worn down in 5k, probably because i keep practiving emergency stops from high speeds

Eitherway, Now have Mintex pads :)

Still have todo my brake fluid replacement, thats Way over due....

Ziggy

those pads look worked hard and do indeed look like they got hot,can you see lamination on the ends and possibly cooked lining material#?
i dont like mintex they dont bed into old discs easy as the materials too hard and so doesnt give a nice pedal feel either as they need to warm up a bit first, something you dont do if tootling to the shops
i prefer my factors make like jurid they give nice pedal feel bed in within 5 miles and do the distance
:)
keep the updates up though
nice to see someone who still does basic servicing rather than distress repairs

Yea - im happy to say that with a little TLC recently the braking has become sooo much better again
Rear drums just reset - de-glazed and readjusted :) = Handbrake works
New pads and a clean = Front brakes work

It amazes me how when i first put pads in, i clamped the line and pushed the old fluid out the caliper, that i must of got air into the lines, the pedal was soft, a full pedal movement on slow stop starts to stop

Should have done the job properly and got the bleeder out in the first place!!

My Next tasks are tho

Sump - again its looking like rust is winning, so either a clean up and wait till next oil change
Alloys Rebalanced, i've got a horrible wheel weight out somewhere
A good clean and polish still outside
Underseal
Speedo Modification still todo

Ziggy

Well been moving on cleaning him up some more

Engine bay has a wipe down, its has a better appearance, but some spot welds that have gone rusty have be wondering whats going on.....

The fog lights have been removed AGAIN
They've rusted up badly again, so instead of standard paint, i've tried a waxyoil coat instead after a good clean up and rust treatment

They look okay :) the lights im not happy with, but there black again not rusty

2013-05-07 14.02.50.jpg

Will post a few piks up of the finished cleaned up ones
If this dont work, they'll go for sand blasting and powder coating :)

The Steel wheels have come to a stop, ran out of paint and a few touch ups needed
So i'll sort that soon :)

Slowly but surly, im making progress!

Loving the car Ziggy. Where did you get such strong lights for it? I can't find anything stronger than 100w and even they don't do bugger all lol :)

Standard bulbs i believe
The drls are leds which do make a difference on there own in dull conditions

Based on pik 4 on post 64 that was every single light on
Drl, sidelight, headlight, full beam and fog

Dont use 100w itll melt the lights

Ziggy

Btw will reply to your ppst shortly

Thanks Ziggy. Sorry never heard that term before (makes me sound dumb for someone who's been working with cars for a while now lol) but what are dlrs lights? I have mini side lights (mine are blue) H7 and H1 for headlights and beams and fog lights. Mine are already burnt out from previous owner but can't afford to replace at mo :)

currently doing the same to my fog lights and holders , the easiest way i found to clean up the holders was to remove all screws and clips and soak them in strong wheel acid , the remaining paint falls off and rust is totally removed.

the fog lights themselves are an entirely different matter and i have ended up scratching the glass lenses on mine :bang:

nice car mate, seem like a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to looking after your cars, any future plans for this?

While summer is here

Underside cleaned and undersealed :)
Wheel archs removed - clean
Underseal wheel archs
Full brake/clutch fluid replacement
Full Iron and Tar fall out removal
Full polish
Lots of sealant/wax :)

Boot socket :) why the hell not :)
