Technical Handbrake Frozen

Technical Handbrake Frozen

I always forget, but checking the handbrake cables where they go into the rear brakes should be a pre-winter check. The little rubber bellows on the ends of the cables rot and fall apart letting water into the cable between the inner and outer, then if the water freezes it locks it all up. A nice dob of silicon grease or similar prevents the water ingress.

What was that you said? I only caught the words 'horse' and 'stable door'!!:)

Mine had split in the middle. One of the easiest jobs I've ever done on a car - thanks to a friend who has a 2 post lift.

Loosen in the cab at the handbrake lever, lift up and take the cables out from the T bar. Undo the clips on the fuel tank and then wiggle the cable to get it out the final hole.

New ones installed with a good amount of grease packed into the rubber ends. Cost about £25 for the pair from my favourite motor factors.

While it was up there, I also replaced the rear discs and pads, and the front drop links. No knocks now either!

I've replaced the handbrake cables with the ones from Tempra 2.0 16v and they fit perfectly.

Since then, it did not froze even at -13C
