Hi All
I have a Fait Brava SX 2001 1.2 that is cutting out.
The car has been to a local mechanic who hooked it up to the computer and he informed me that the ECU's diagnosis told him the occasional cutting out was down to a barometric pressure sensor which (in his experience!) generally means there is a pin hole in one of the rubber pipes on the engine but at that time it would be too small to detect.

His advice was to wait until it got worse ie: car cutting out/stalling on a regular basis (the theory being that the hole would then be big enough to detect easily ..)

Well the car went back in last week as it now cuts out every day, bloody dangerous now !!! Anyway, this time he said he looked & listened but still could not find a hole so his next option would have to be to change the M.A.P sensor. He also said that if that did not fix the problem I would have to replace the ECU..

OK so here I am 200 pounds lighter & still a knackered conking out car ! Any thoughts or experiences would be great folks as I now need to decide when to cut & run it cost me 600 pounds last year for a gearbox bearing & clutch this car only has 45000 miles & been driven gently all its life but I cant afford to continue like this ...PLEASE HELP ME !!!

John

a scrapyard MAP will cost you a fiver and is easy to fix, but i personally think the mechanic has been mislead by an old fault code and the problem is acutally the crank sensor (which rarely triggers a code)

Jug..
Thanks for replying, unfortunatly I bought a new MAP sensor best part of a hundred quid..If the crank sensor is the fault would that also light up the ECU light on the dash ? I have also noticed that the engine is not ticking over as "smooth" as it once did !!

Thanks M8

no not usually, but it depends on the fault.

on the 1.2, that is often due to poor HT leads or sparkplugs.

I strongly think that it is the crank sensor that's making your engine cut out. I have had the same problems with my Bravo 1.6SX and the fault does not really show when hooked up on the diagnostic machine or even on the dash.

All you need is a new crank sensor and your car should be up and going fine again. But be aware that the head of the crank sensor is magnetized. Best if you do not knock it against any hard surface or it'll just be as good as fooked.

Cheers!

Thanks Folks.. I will try a replacement from a scrappy..The only difference I can see is the fact that my ECU light is illuminated on the dash !!
