What a berk!

What a berk!

Had to laugh at the guy who just got in his car and drove off

"Oh, look. The petrol station is on fire. Ah well..."

Who ever authorised the pump from behind the till is for the chop as well, broken the law in authorising the pump dispense for starters! Idiot.

Yes you do have ask yourself what were they thinking. They obviously weren't checking properly before switching the pump on. Probably nattering about last nights Eastenders!

Worryingly lots of forecourts are card only and unattended theses days. Our local ASDA is, somebody could start a right old blaze at one of those and not even need the pump to be authorised.

TBH I agree, I've often wondered how these are allowed when you look at how stringent the regs are in order for a site to obtain a license to dispense fuel.

With CCTV and the fact that it would be a pretty simple job to obtain the cardholders name and address I don't see an issue with it personally. I may be biased because I also can't stand dealing with people and will always use self serve where ever it's available.

CCTV isn't remotely monitored though, and its the retailers legal responsibility to ensure the fuel is being dispensed into a correct container or vehicle etc.

There is obviously more to it than meet the eye, and the forecourt I used to work on didn't have self serve, but going on how strict the regulations are, and how H&S everyone seems to be, I'm surprised that its allowed.

Its now very common in France too. All the supermarkets we filled up at while we were there last month had converted all their forecourts to card only and closed the payment booths.

I know our ASDA has CCTV (You can see the cameras and the signs) but I am pretty sure that is for retrospective monitoring in the event of an incident and not that it is proactively monitored in any way.

I think the fact you need to use your card would deter some but there is always going to be someone who would be daft enough to do something like that who is not going to be concerned about that. A small risk though I would say.

For all we know he might have had children in the car or had no idea how to use an extinguisher..

The guy who managed to put it out failed to remove the safety pin initially and put himself at risk by getting an extinguisher from that close to the fire.... No doubt there would have been another rack on the forecourt he could have got a extinguisher off. Which he would have been safer doing.. That and a test squirt before committing to tackling the fire to ensure the extinguishers functionality

But fair play for doing what he did

It was the look and casualness with which he did it - almost as though it was an everyday occurrence

If it was on the pump, and a better quality camera, then the idiot could be identified much easier.

I can't see how that would help, with our justice system he'd just get a slap on the wrist anyway, and he's hardly saine in doing that in the first place, I doubt more CCTV would be a deterrent.

<sarcasm> If there is one thing we don't have enough of in the country its cctv cameras! </sarcasm>

George Orwell would be proud just how closely 1984 mimics our society and political system.

Not surprising some idiots like this guy feel the need to throw a bit of anarchy into the mix occasionally

Yes, but on the other hand if it wasn't for idiots like this being "anarchistic" (and I use that word very loosely in this case) then there'd be no need for CCTV, etc.

What he's doing isn't in the spirit of anarchy. ie. trying to rid the country of a ruler, he's just being a nob.

Oh god only knows what this muppet is trying to achieve, 2nd degree burns?

my point was really against those calling for more CCTV cameras who probably have little idea of just how much they are already monitored

Should go try it down the houses of parliament... Oh wait.

He's a little early i hear that early november is good for this, if done badly enough the british public will celebrate his failure for ever more
