Hello all.

My 1.9jtd had a new engine put in last year by a cowboy, however there have been no problems. I have noticed a large oil leak and inspected. On the back of the oil cooler you have the oil filter housing, there is what looks like an outlet that has had a piece of tube and a bung shoved in it to stop it leaking. I've been to fiat specialists and fiat themselves and no one can tell me what should be there if anything. I have been told a breather pipe, but its inbetween a drive shaft and the cam so surely any pipe would be ripped to shreds. If you take the pipe off it doesn't flow it just drips. Some people seem to think there should be a bung that goes on there but no one seems to know. Can anyone shed some light so I can stop my mental oil leak!

BTW whatever it is it has been fine for the past year and past 8000 miles!

Thanks for the reply.

No its not that... That screws in, this is a part of the housing and is very near the top cap that youd unscrew to change filter. Both engines had the same oil cooler and none of these diagrams seem to show it! Any other ideas?

Tom

Just before Next oil change degrease it all so you can see what you doing, drain oil, remove oil filter, remove the thing and blank it properly to your satisfaction.

This is what I would like to do... I just want to check I'm not going to do any damage blanking it. I'm wondering if it has a use... If it doesn't then I will blank it!

How long has it been blanked off for already without causing any problems?

Hi, :)
I'm suspecting it's an engine sourced from a "non-FIAT" vehicle,
so it's not recognised by "FIAT-only" people,

I would try and get hold of pics/spec of the genuine GP set-up , then purchase and swap it all at a convenient point..

once thoroughly CLEAN;)

Thanks for the responses guys. Done around 10,000 without any problems. I work at a Renault dealer so my system is no help! Fiat have helped me out with some diagrams and although this is a genuine cooler in there the diagrams suggest no third pipe coming off of it, but no blank plug either so I guess ill just blank it! Thanks for the help!

and the engine was sourced by fiat people, just fitted on the cheap lol. Same engine code etc etc and had only done 20,000 so all nice new parts.

at top of FF homepage there is an ePER link..;)

your MJ 1.9 may be from a suzuki, alfa.. etc hence the odd plumbing

chances are the different housings just screw onto the same block

I've just seen the parts diagram you posted .
Looks like blanked off stub could be part of an oil to coolant oil cooler system.
The top two UN numbered hoses on your diagram.

Just notice you said you already have two hoses connected to cooler, so ignore what I just posted

Right then I know exactly what it is
Its a drain to drain the filter
When you change the filter unscrew the cap until the oil comes out
A pipe should be fitted to drain into container then when the flow stops unscrew fully and change filter
New filter should come with 2 O rings so as to seal when part unscrewed but let oil out of the bit your on about
Hope I've explained it so you can understand
Regards Stephen

Wow how incredibly helpful of Fiat , pet hate is oil going where it shouldn't for want of something like this.
Thanks for explanation .
Top marks for working it out.

Add that nobody seems to recognise this Part..including FIAT..

From the little detail I can see in the pic..it looks poorly executed...
Hose with a bolt in and wormdrive clip..
