I have a fiat punto sporting 16v 3 door. I hope this is the right group because i do not have a clue :)

The problem i am having with the car is that about 2 weeks ago the alternator went on the car with obviously a load of warning lights coming on. I figured it was the alternator because 2 jump starts later still no power and loss of power steering but brakes working. This was confirmed the next day.

Garage charging nearly £350 to fix it so thought sod that will buy one myself which i did for £170 and fitted it last night. I did jump start the car to get it going even though not advised but everything was fine apart from a few warnings and the power steering not working. The battery is holding about 14v and the alternator is 120amp one.

I thought taking it for a spin today to work would maybe clear the faults but it never so i disconnected the battery for a few hours and that never worked either. I am now starting to get a little annoyed lol because they have not reset.

Faults are as follows and any ideas would be greatly appreciated !!!!

No power steering, hill holder and ESP unavailable, Left front ASR disconnected, and the ASR light on dashboard near city driving button is yelllow.

Thanks in advance and hopefully i can get to the bottom of this.

Hi , and welcome, :)
the year / reg of your car will tell us what model punto,
I suspect it's 2002 to 2006;)

with the engine OFF battery should be 12 Volts ( yours may be less..) any lower than 10 - the battery is stuffed..(n)

with engine running battery should read @14 Volts - charge from alternator;)

the PAS needs LOTS of electrical power..so any dodgy connections etc will stop it,
SOME other stuff MAY need fault codes cleared..,

Charlie - Oxford

It is a 2007 and the reg is JP03 BOW (private plate) thanks.

Going to clean sensors and plug computer in later next week.

based in pembrokeshire and yes we noticed water in the alternator when we changed it last night. Also had to rewire electrics for the windows because the cables where water coroded.

Just seems a bit weird that its still showing faults and no power steering with the new alternator fitted. One thing i think it might be is the amp power but i assumed with the air con and electrics ETC the highest ampage would be best bet.

It not a good idea to install a different alternator. From what car is this 120A ?

Is the d+ wire connected?

Measure voltage from the cigar lighter inside the car if you have a volt meter with the engine running.

hopefully computer will clear fault and the alternator was ordered from a supply garage using the V5 document and chasis number to get the right alternator i hope. the only problem was it came up 3 alternators with the only difference being the ampage, so i went for highest output.

You can't just clear these warnings. This is not your problem.

please measure the voltage inside the car.

Also one more question, when you start the engine, does the battery light go off?

you'll need 14V from alternator for PAS to work;)

what have you got..??

believe it or not i do not have lighter socket, as for lights i only have red steering light and amber stop light on dash the rest is just information on dashboard when i switch on.

you've only posted about your power issue,
what else have you needed to do..??

new alternator rewire to get electrics to work for windows, calipers ripped to shreds and breaks been redone and now looking and grinding like they need done again, i average about 20 mile a week. The car is probably up there with the worst car ever but the wife loves it. Just want the power steering to work so she can drive it lol, frankly i just want to get rid of it

Could do as i have still got the old one, few things to try out in the car with help from here. Going to check voltage, sensors and fiddle about with it. Will mention the alternator to my mate and try it. Will not be doing anything till middle of the week no though, will let you know if anything worked

Frustrating.., any chance of swapping the resistor packs from the old alternator to new..,
then you'll know if it's down to incompatible wiring.., ( the other bits just go round and round..)
Charlie

Do you mean voltage regulators?

They are NOT compatible.

GP sporting 16v (t-jet) has the 105A alternator. (if it's the starjet or any other 8v,1.2 etc it's the 70A)

He installed the 120A (probably from the multijet 1.9 (?) version if it's an original part)

Find the correct part by your VIN.

well i have decided to admit it and say the alternator is the wrong one after spending 3 days trying crap out, got the old one tested to see if it was salvagable which it is not. Going to try and get my money back for the new alternator which is unlikly. Went to fiat dealership and they cant wittle it down to right alternator for the car, choice of 2 and they want over 300 just for the part AND low and behold it does not come up in there system with the correct ampage. Man i hate FIAT lol
