Is it possible for the fuel tank to 'overflow' ?

As i have just filled my car up, went shopping but when i got back could smell diesel. When i filled it up it took £39.02.... so i carried on to £40 (which i have not done before in this car)

On looking under the car when i got home there is diesel on what looks like the bottom of the fuel tank, and also when driving there was a sloshing noise from the fuel tank. There was only a small drip on the bottom of the car - nothing on the drive where it is always parked so it cant be leaking all the time.

It is very difficult to tell where there drip has come from too.

(apologies for the photo being upside down ... not sure why that has happened)

Thanks

It is from the top seal from the fuel pump, mine did this when I force fed it to much diesel. Look under you rear bench, lift the carpet and using a flat screw driver lift out the fuel pump cover( large black plastic circle). You will see the evidence of the leak, try to tighten the ribbed ring but it probably is tight, clean up the residue diesel and avoid over filling, diesel does expand quite a bit, worth bearing in mind when you fill up on summer mornings, I've seen this a few times. It's worth checking the fuel pump seal but it's a large rubber o ring I've not seen one damaged. I've always filled to the first click never any more and it's only done it once on a very hot day just after filling up.

I checked in the fuel pump and sure enough there was a puddle of diesel. Cleaned it up, made sure the o ring was tight and it didn't happen the next time i filled it up.

Only i filled it yesterday and diesel is steadily dripping from the bottom of the car again, looked at the fuel pump and found a small lake of diesel. Cleaned it all up again but after a 5 minute trip out it was all back.

Does this mean i need a new O ring, and if so where can i buy one?

Thanks

It's either the oring oe part from dealer I'm sure, it's worth watching whilst the covers off though at idle to ensure one of the pop on/off fuel pipes is not leaking, these have o rings in also, I think the main o ring personally.
