Okay this may sound vague but there's some blue piping that runs across the top of the engine bay, then down the driver side bulk head under the car and goes back up by the boot. Anyway in the engine bay its been worn away and has a 2cm long gash in it, what is this blue pipe for and would gaffer taping it up be okay or does it need to be air tight??
Thanks in advance.

Does this blue pipe connect to the inlet manifold at all?
If so I suspect its the carbon canister lines
It holds the fumes from the petrol tank and allows it to be burnt instead of been ejected into the atmosphere

Not sure where it goes to from or to. I'll check and take a picture. Just seems odd that it not affected anything but there's a huge hole in a pipe

As Ziggy suggests, blue pipes are normally the fuel vent pipes. Somewhere along the line, possibly under the front wing, or near the fuel tank, will be a canister containing carbon. This holds the fuel vapours and allows the tank to breathe without fuel vapours escaping to atmosphere. There will be a purge valve that allows the vapours to be drawn into the engine to be burnt, once the engine is warm enough.

With the pipe holed, the vapours will escape. You may get annoying petrol smells in the cabin. When the purge operates, it will suck air into the inlet manifold instead of fuel vapours, causing it to run weak. The lambda sensors will identify the weak running, and the ECU will richen it to compensate. This may just cause higher fuel consumption, or it may light the engine management light.

Any fuel resistant tubing can be used to repair it. Your local car accessory shop should be able to help, hopefully with a couple of in-line connectors, so you just replace the chaffed bit.

just seen this on mine too when working on alternator - the pipe rubs against the shielded cable / pipe above it with engine vibration and wears down until it leaks - might be a common fault

blue pipe rubs where red arrow points - sorry not very clear picture, it was dark!
