Okay, many thanks for that. Between the Grande Punto, Punto Evo and back to the Punto again Fiat know how to work a good design I guess.

No harm in that, I like my Grande Punto.

I believe the real reason is that fiat are tied into a deal with GM as the Grande was a joint venture with vaxhall (corsa) the two cars share a lot and i believe the deal runs out in 2016

i think they could have made a lot more of the Abath Grande and EVO while vaxhall were selling the VXR by the bucket load there are very few hot fiats about

Thanks again for that, I have one more question, it seems to me that Fiat dont/didnt do much advertising or marketing for the Grande Punto/Punto Evo/Punto,they are very nice cars so its a pity they werent marketed as much as other cars (in Ireland anyway)
I dont see much advertising on the UK TV channels either.

Is there any particular reason for that do you think? I know they push the 500 to the max, seems silly to ignore the other models though.

Thanks.

It seems fiat are very short sighted when it comes to advertising, as a prime example they push the fiat 500 when it sells its self, at one point in 2009 dealerships couldn't get them in as fast as they were selling them.

They pushed the horrifically overpriced 500L with tv advertising and a big launch campaign last year, and now with the launch of the new panda 4x4 they seem to be pushing that. But these are niche model cars with a limited market taking the bulk of advertising revenue, while the trusty popular up to sits unloved and unsold because people don't know what great value for money it is.

While the family focused 500L is around the £22,000 mark for a top of the range model with all the options ticked, the current punto with all extras at the moment will cost you £5k less which if so inclined is enough saved cash to buy another punto that's only a year old.

Dealers have delivery mileage 64 plate top of the range puntos for under £10k right now, it's just no one knows about them.

People in the croma forum will tell you they are very good cars but fiat didn't sell many because they never advertised them. And again they were fantastic value for money.

I don't think the UK is fiats main target market so it seems no revenue is sent this way, I thinks that's why their customer service and dealer network is so bad, because they don't invest properly in it

You'd have to be mad to buy a new punto now, even at 10k. Much as I love my Grande, things have moved on and it's old hat now; the two facelifts have wrecked it too. They only sell two fairly basic trim levels and only two na petrol engines, all the interesting ones have been cut.
Via a broker 10k would get you into a far more modern Ibiza 1.2tsi, which will also be worth more in a few years. If you want more go, 12k gets you the 140bhp fr with a sub 8s 0-60, cylinder deactivation and a claimed 60mpg.

The punto now only comes as a 3 door, I suspect if you want 5 doors they push the 500L on you, but £10k will get you a 64 plate top end car with climate control cruise control blue and me etc etc and the 1.3 multimeter Diesel engine.

Edit: it seems you can still get the 5 door, and the fiat website claim it's still available as a twin air except only the 1.2/1.4 petrol engines and the 1.3 multijet are listed.

I have no idea why they done away with the twin air and multi air on the punto, and a 5 door with a 1.6multijet would be a great car, it's like fiat have lost all interest in the punto and now only sell it out if some sense of duty, despite it being there best seller for many many years (before the 500)

Apart from that and a couple of petrol engines like you say fiat seems to have completely done away with any interesting engines across the who range of cars. "abarth" now only makes one car and that's not really very competitive in the market engine wise.

You're probably right if you have £10k in you're back pocket something like a seat is probably a better bet

I agree with much of what has just been said and I too think FIAT need to seriously think about the sector the Punto sits in. The 500L is not realy an equivalent model as it sits in a different sector. So if you want a smallish hatchback rather than a mini MPV type vehicle you are stuck with the ageing Punto (whatever happened to the Bravo by the way??).

The rate at which Ford seem able to sell the Fiesta shows there is still a UK market for such a car and that not everybody wants the appearance and 'high up' driving position the 500L gives you.

FIAT realy do need to respond to the sector with a new Punto equivalent.

Vauxhall has just rehashed and reheated the old Corsa up and put in new 1.0 3cyl turbo engines in and it's had good reviews.

Underneath it all is the old Corsa still.

Fiat could do the same with the Punto but they won't. Main focus is to push the 500 badged products.

Problem is also is that the GP was never well engineered or made from the start. This meant people would not come back to the model again or recommend it and lost themselves sales.

Also, as the line up got cut through its lifetime its appeal diminished with less models to choose, people walked away to its competitors.

I think it's interesting that Vauxhall were still managing to shift a decent number of corsas up to it's death last month yet Punto sales fell off a cliff in about 2009. Evo facelift was a serious mistake and then they just gave up on it.

I think another big problem is the last time I saw an advert for the grande or punto in general was back when it launched in 2007. I had barely had my license a few months when the grande came out so I never looked at it really. I was looking at old Corsa B's and Mk4 feistas before I got my license

There arent many grandes round where I live so i pretty much forgot the grande even existed. It wasnt until i was looking for a new car a couple of years ago that one of my mates suggested the punto. It was love at first sight, if I had seen it advertised or pushed a bit more then who knows I would have got one earlier!

Does the 500 even need advertising? They are everywhere and easily identifiable. Yet no adverts at all for the punto, let alone the poor old Bravo :(

I think Bravo production has ceased hasn't it???

It doesn't appear on FIAT UK's web site under 'new cars' at least. It's a shame because the last incarnation was a nice looking car with a very nice looking interior.

However if you dig around the FIAT website a bit or use Google it brings this up which seems to imply you can still get one

Their is a thread in the Bravo section. It's gone, a case another good looking Fiat with no substance.

On a side note, I see the 500x is getting good reviews.
