Daughters GP 1.2 8v engine management light has came on diagnostic came up as an unknown code 172H/370 anyone know what it means ?

172 hex converted to decimal is 370.
Maybe the P code is P0370 or P0172 ?

Just a crazy idea.

What are you using to read the codes ?

Got them read at local garage using Snap-On diagnostic kit.
I also thought that maybe they would be PO172 and PO370

I would have expected the snap-on kit to recognise the codes.
If the snap-on kit doesn't, then i guess it's unlikely that multiecuscan will.
However, put a shout out, there may be someone local to you who has it and would hook up for free.

It's looking like it @ £72 + vat

My last ditch is I've bought a set of leads and downloaded multiscan on the laptop to see if it reads anything.

Just tested the Multiecuscan on my MKII Punto and alls well
But when I scrolled up to Grande Punto the available ECU's are highlighted in RED ! Does this mean its not going to read the GP ?

Don't have access to the GP at the moment to test it.
