General Ducato Speedometer Problem

Re: Ducato speedo failure

I have not been following this forum for a while but see that other people are now suffering with the speedo sensor failure. Strange how it's about half the price from Peugeot. I opened up my failed sensor and found that the print circuit board had been contaminated with gearbox oil. Seal failed.

Re: Ducato speedo failure

If The Fuse Keeps Blowing Aswell Then The Problem Is The Crankcase Ventilator Is Faulty, As There All On The Same Circuit.

My speedo/odometer problem is a bit
odd; after about three months off the
road I found that the odometer reading
had been wiped, and gone back to
reading 0 km. It had been around
10,000 km. The battery had gone dead,
but that shouldn't make any difference,
should it?

With the battery charged and ignition
on, the reading started clocking up
kilometres even without the engine
running and the vehicle standing still -
the trip recorder did it even faster.

When I took the vehicle out, the speedo
read normally up to about 10 kph, and
then flipped right over to 170 kph at
anything above that - and the odometer
clocked up around 3,800 km over a
distance of about 165 km! The rev
counter was also pretty erratic.

Has anyone else come across this
problem?
If I need replace the sender unit as
some people suggest, is it the same
unit regardless of whether the
dashboard reading is in miles or km?

I also suspect I'm getting a wrong
reading on the oil level - anyone know
where the sender unit for that is
located?

Same problem with an 2002 2.8 LWB

Had it in a shed for a few months while doing it up. After jumpstarting it, all 4 gauges jump at starting then nothing.

Dealership ran a full diagnostic that cost over €100 but couldn't find the problem. They say it could be a faulty console but that could cost €500 new!!

I know this is an old thread.

Do you need to buy two parts ie the sender on the top and then the drive bit that fits into the box or did they come together.

I have been looking at a diagram for a peugeot one but it only seems to be half of it.

I am looking for a Fiat Ducato 2.0 JTD 2005 - like the others it has only done 12000 miles and the speedo is not working and also appears down on power.

Does anyone have the part numbers?

Thanks in advanced

read my post from last week, all sorted now. I got the speed sensor for £24.99 from ebay but fiat quoted me £86 inc vat. Still had to take to our garage to redo the oil as I lost so much when changing the sensor and it had to be up on a ramp to redo the oil. That was £96 all in so fixed it for £120.99, the engine runs so much better now, and will rev right through easily. my motorhome only has 7500 miles but due to lack of use this sensor is a common problem to go if not used. Hope this helps.

Managed to sort mine.

The sensor was £77 with discount from Fiat the ebay sellers stated that mine was a dealer only part!.

For others completing the job themselves it is good to know that the cogs fitted to the old one needs to be pulled out and pushed into the new one. I found the best way was to remove old one pull out cog and put the sensor back in as this stops the oil spilling out.

Push the cogs into the new one then a quick switch and jobs a good one, little oil spilt.

Part number on the box was 1332811080.

Very useful thread this.
I have an 03 2.0l Ducato showing the problem of No speedo for c.10miles, then working almost properly, plus a feel that the vehicle is down a bit on power too.

Having read this thread, its seems likely I have the gearbox mounted sender problem.

Several people have noted that the Peugeot price for the unit, is considerably less than the Fiat price.
Does anyone know if these Pug/Fiat parts are interchangable?

Many thanks for any replies.

just like to thank the previous posters on this thread as I now have a fully functioning speedo for the 1st time in 2 years and the odd occaisional misfire has gone too. Problem was undiagnosed by 2 fiat dealers.
Part cost 80 quid (genuine Fiat) from Swansea Truck, a saving of 40 over local fiat dealer. 47 to fit.
What would we all do without the internet(y)

hi guys my friend has this same problem with a 03 2.0l any ideas?

Had the same problem. A few months ago a found that the battery was faulty. I replaced the battery and strange enough this also fixed the problem with the speedo and tripmeter and both have been working perfectly ever since.
Cheers, Emile

Motorhome - Fiat Ducato 2004 2.0 jtd 11 - After 25.000 km. My speedometer vent crazy. My speedometer was "alive" until the enging reached work temp, then it "jumped" up and down a couple times, then rested in 0. I lost top power also, because the computer vent to default program. First the mecanic could not find an error in the spedo sensor and thought it was the speedometer and would replace it. I said no. Please replace the sensor first. Its cheaper and i have been recearching the problem and 99 % of speed error`s come from speedo unit. NOW i have a Speedometer who works again. Sorry for my poor english :) have a nice day.

Could you possibly send the sellers name on ebay who sold the sensor if in the case he is is a supplier
Thanks bill old as you feel

I have a sender for the speedo in my garage. I had a problem with the speedo and bought a new one on Ebay for £80. When fitted the problem was still there. I discovered that Fuse 11 was blown so I replaced it and it worked for about 30 secs and blew again. I found the fault in a broken connection on the sender of the cooling water header bottle. Having fixed it, everything worked fine. I replaced the old speedo sensor in the gearbox and it worked fine with the intention of getting a refund on the new one but the supplier would not co-operate so I decided to put the new one in. So I have one guaranteed working sender (my old one) for sale at just £25 if you want it.

Thanks for the info guys, just signed up to say my 1.9JTD Ducato powered motorhome speedo packed in (with assiciated power loss) and ebay provided a new part (no 9635080680) delivered for £15.90 which was a damn sight cheaper than Fiat who quoted £198.82 fitted.:slayer:
The ebay item even came with a new cog, fitting took 5 mins, parked van onto a downhill kerb, crawled under and swapped unit with no oil spillage.

I believe so - this was the spec for my replacement which also fits:

CITROEN : 616070 / 9623111980 / 9635080680
FIAT : 9635080680
PEUGEOT : 616070 / 9623111980 / 9623111980
RENAULT : 9635057280

I have a this speedo problem too. I had three diagnostic checks done, two in Germany and 1 in the UK. The Germans refused any money because they felt it "unjust to take money when they failed to find a fault" I had to almost break this Germans arm to give him €20, when I went to SG Petch in Darlington they wanted £80 upfront before they would even look at the van. When I informed them that VAN had already had two diagnostics and nothing can be found they were not in the slightest bit interested. They had an either "pay or bugger off" kind of attitude. British business is so lacking!

I remember watching dragons den with Peter Jones and Theo the-fetus who were analysing a product, they criticise the product for being "too well made". They suggested to the inventor it needed to be weaker so that it would break creating more money in parts, it turned my stomach to know that cretins like these are leading the business community. truth is guys if this is as common a fault as it would appear Fiat should be held to account

Anyway guys, I still have this problem with the sensor I will read up and hopefully be able to repair it myself. It is fantastic that these websites exist. I am over the moon that I have found your comments and advice thank you very much indeed

Everything is designed to last the warranty period now nothing longer. Theres a manufacturer of window winders about 40 miles from here, their standard model has a life expectancy of 13 years but in practice its more like 17 years. The manfacturers now are requesting a 5 year lifespan. The cost of production will be the same it'll just be junk.

hi there, 1 have a ducato 2.8 which i have had for 6years when i first purchased the vehicle the speedo would work for a short while and then stop and start i over come the problem by removing the speedo cable end that goes in the gear box i then removed the gear cog that the end of the speedo fits into i placed a nylon washer under the speedo cog that was small enough to fit into the aperture, that was 5 years ago at the time of my repair fiat quoted my £1750 to slove the problem i have never had a problem since hoe this helps

Ducato 10 1.9D speedo started getting intermittent then stopped about a year ago, occasionally it would work for a few miles then stop again, In recent sub zero temperatures I had trouble pulling away, felt like the van was overloaded, now fixed both problems easily, simply drained out the water infiltrated white oil from the gearbox and replaced it with 2 litres of fresh gear oil, speedo is fine and no more frozen gearbox. It's easy and might be a good idea to include this oil change in the annual service.
