Hi everyone,

I've just joined the forum. I bought a Ducato 11 JTD SWB a couple of weeks ago with a view of converting it into a camper.

I've got plans all drawn out and I'm pretty much ready to make a start.

The only query I have is where I can cut a hole in the loadspace for the gas drop out (if a gas canister leaks, there needs to be ventilation to the outside. As gas is heavier than air, it must be on the floor).

As the plans stand, I will have my fully sealed gas box at the back door so I can access the gas bottle from the outside.

Can I drill a hole (possibly a number of small holes with a sink drain type idea over the top of it) about 20/30cm in from the back doors? I've had a look underneath and can't really see anything which would get in my way, or which I would damage if I punctured it. The spare tyre will be inside, as the nut to loosen it from the cage underneath would be right where I've got the kitchen unit.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

The hole isn't that big drop out should be minimum 20mm internal diameter must be located so that its not covered or obscured in anyway with the cylinder in position. You'd want the sink drain to go right through the floor and be sealed inside the locker and outside. The arrangement you're describing with small holes sounds like the gas could accumulate under the locker as the floor isn't flat. Cylinder also requires retaining strap inside the locker.

With a SWB you have so little room you'd be mad to put the spare inside although the spare wheel area is great for water tanks

Agree with the last statements. Further, how long do you plan to stay away for? We converted a swb van last year, we love it, but get by fine with smaller gas canisters you can stow anywhere. Also it is possible to panel the van tight to the metal and get a 6 foot bed across the width. We have made it by using bench seats and a table which drops between them for the bed.

Thanks for the replies folks. That certainly is good advice and I shall be following it.

The reason I chose the Ducato over another SWB is the internal width, meaning I can get a bed in widthways, rather than lengthways.

I've done up some rough plans on Google Sketchup and have taken screenshots, but I'm having problems uploading images on here.

As for the solar panels, I have looked into these but I've a feeling that they're going to be expensive for the return. I only get at most 2 days off together so I would find it hard to justify the costs.

Thanks again for the replies and I'll get pics of my progress uploaded as soon as I can work out how to do it.
