Hi all,
Hope someone can point me in the right direction, I have a 2.3 2010 camper and am having issues on the first startup of the day. The van starts perfectly, however it will not rev up and is lumpy if the accelerator is pressed. If I persist and hold the pedal steady it will rev up but lumpy. Once the motor has had time to warm up up then it is fine with no further problems until the following morning. It does seem worse following rain, possible pointing to damp but where?

I am up in darkest Scotland so please bare with me if I don't reply quickly 3G connection varies.
Regards
Stewart

It sounds possibly like your EGR valve is sticking open. I would get a garage or maybe the AA if you're a member to read any ECU fault codes first.

I'm not familiar with the 2010 Ducato, but at the back of the engine, usually on the left side, you should see a metal pipe coming up from the exhaust manifold, turning right at right angles and then going through a metal valve before it continues across the engine into the inlet manifold. That valve is the EGR. Usually they have a thin black pipe coming out near the top, as they are vacuum activated. Once the engine is hot and all's working normally, stop the engine and pull off that black pipe and block it up with a small bolt, or similar. That will keep your EGR permanently closed. Take a drive to check no faults come up. If they do, put the pipe back. There are usually no faults shown and if so, leave the pipe off and blocked and see how the engine starts the next day.

Thanks for the info and advice. We will be heading home in a few days where I have access to more tools etc so will give a go then. As long as it lasts that long if not Greenflag here we come.

Thanks again.

Could be water filling up the recess in between the two cams, where your very expensive injectors sit, the plugs corrode and as I found it also seizes the bolts that hold them in, had two snap off in head. 4 new injectors and labour for stripping head down and luckily he managed to hear up and weld a nut to the small protruding bolt remains and he managed to save the head. Get it checked out by a good diesel injection specialist

2010 ducato egr valve is on the front right, below the inlet manifold.
Providing its the ford puma engine.

Just a quick update, read elsewhere about adding Redex into a full tank. Filled up yesterday with BP ultimate ( nearly broke my wallet) at £1.47 a litre) and added half a bottle of Redex diesel. Drove around 30 miles back to the site. Started this AM perfectly.

Will see how it goes, at present going very well. Does show that supermarket fuels may leave something to be desired, I have usually used them but for the future it will be branded.

Thanks for all comments

I always use 1 in 200 two stroke oil in all my diesels. It makes it run quieter, lubricates the pump and injectors and it's supposed to give one or two mpg more. If I add 30 litres of diesel, I add 150ml of two stroke oil (mineral, not synthetic).
