my ducato 2002 has started a clonking noise occasionally when on full lock either way when going very slow, for example parking etc,
its definatly not a c.v joint or anything like that, it sound like its the spring slipping or something, i jacked it up and can not seem to find any play anywhere, and the spring appears to ber intact, is there any common problems or things im missing? thankyou

When you say it sounds like the spring slipping do you mean it's more of a twanging sound? Are the clonks/twangs related to the speed? Does the sound come from a particular side?

To be honest, although you say it's definitely not a CV joint the symptoms do suggest that. What makes you so sure?

hello mate, well i know its not the cv as the cvmakes a clicking different noise, its definatly the spring, it is like a twang if you understand and a bing, not a click click click like a cv

Ok. Well, if it happens as you're actually turning the steering, it could be the bearing at the top of the strut. I've looked in my copy of eLearn but the illustrations aren't that good so I can't see exactly how the top of the Ducato's strut is designed and I'm having to go on experience of other cars. Hopefully there's someone else on here who has better knowledge.
Even if it only happens when you've reached full lock it could still be the bearing. It could be sticking and the suspension movement could be causing it to judder round.
I can't think of any other possibilities at present.

Sounds very much like a broken spring to me, it’s usually just the bottom 2-3 inches that snaps off, and the broken bit may well be found in the bottom of the spring cup.
It can sometimes be hard to see without the suspension hanging and a good torch.
Try running your finger around the bottom and top of the spring and compare it to the other side.

When mind did this, it was easy to spot as the steering won't self centre from full lock for the first couple of turns.

ok thanks, will check this all out at the weekend, pretty sure its not a spring, vans sitting level etc, how could i test the bearing? and could i get away with greasing it up or will it be a case of replacing?
by the way i also have another new problem whick ive posted lol :bang:
