Help Please...

I need a replacement (mechanical) speedo cable for my Motorhome based on a 2001 (first reg 24-05-2001) Ducato 10 1905 cc TD SWB

I am stuck as the replacement cable supplied by Fiat "thats the one, and only one we have listed" does not fit

I have supplied them with the Vin/Chassis/Frame no

The speedo end, (as opposed to the gearbox end) does not fit my speedo (it is the original speedo)

Attached is a picture of the rear of the speedo

Any ideas?

thanks in advance

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

The parts catalogue shows 1 cable for RHD 1905cc vans and 1 for LHD 1905cc vans with normal speedometers.

There's a different cable if the van is RHD and has a tachograph fitted or 2 different cables if it has a tachograph and was produced for the French market.

In this diagram from the catalogue, GD is for RHD and GS is for LHD.

Thanks a million!

So glad i joined

You correctly identified the cable i needed and it now fits!

The long story (just in case anyones interested)

I recently had a Thatcham Alarm fitted (by an approved specialist)
First drive after - no speedo (speed was working day before)
Looks 99% certain to me that the speedo cable was broken (at the speedo end) when the instrument panel was refitted during the alarm installation (nowt was said)

A Local garage ordered the new cable and a few days later went to have it fitted.

The mechanic asked how much the motorhome weighted as the 3000kg ramp groaned a bit!

He then removed the old cable (lots of strees releasing the gearbox end for some reason) Another worry!

I was under the van at that time taking pictures of the underside(i had permission to be there!) I was looking to see if there was space for a locker to be underslung and accessed from inside for valuables!

The saga continued as he reported the cable was not the correct one as the speedo end did not fit....so i left with part of my old cable chopped off and refitted to the gearbox end to stop leaks and waited to hear back

Whilst parked up at home i noticed that the radio was'nt working (it was on the way to the garage) - the ariel was disconnected!

So i had to remove the dash (glad i already had a Torx set) reconnected the ariel but noticed more bits of plastic loose behind the dash - from the old speedo cable

Waited a week as the garage were going to chase up the supplier went back with the handful of bits but it didnt help so garage promised to chase up the "correct" part

This is when i joinied the forum and discovered I did in fact have the correct cable

Discovered this as I went back to the garage and compaired numbers

At this point i sat down in the van with the old broken cable bits and the new cable (I know the garage owner so i was doing this at home) trying to fit it to the rear of the speedo

2 hours later i finally discovered what was wrong

The plastic endpiece of the old speedo inner wire had been jammed onto (you could not see this as the parts were inside the plastic barrel of the new cable) the end of plastic endpiece of the new cable!!

Thus making the the assembly 10mm too long - hence it would not fit

Thanks again for a great service

Paul
