If battery has ever been allowed to go flat the lifespan is dramatically reduced. If battery turns out to be ok. Check the voltage from the alternator, maybe the battery isn't being fully charged. Brush material can cause shorts in the starter and alternator. Might be fine when it stops in one orientation and flatten the battery in another.
