Whistling ducato

Hi All.
I have a ducato based motor home 2.8 t.d on a recent trip to Spain I noticed a whistling noise when the engine is under hard labour.
It seems to do it when I am on a long uphill climb, if I am doing 60 in fourth and change into fifth and accelerate hard it starts, if I ease off the throttle it stops.
Is this normal anyone else noticed this.

Re: Whistling ducato

Hi.
I hope it’s not turbo wear the vans only done 15k.
I don’t know if this is normal, maybe getting rid of excess pressure from the turbo after a long high rev run in fourth then changing up to fifth gear.
Or maybe a split pipe, the thing is I don’t remember it doing it on my previous trip to spain.

Re: Whistling ducato

Last year I bought our 2003 JTD based Hymer with only 11000 miles on the clock, and noticed exactly the same problem. If the engine is pulling reasonably hard and steady like up a long motorway incline, then at about 3/4 throttle the turbo starts to emmit a faint squeal somewhat like a slipping fanbelt. If the situation is allowed to persist, the noise increases and then the turbo boost warning light will illuminate until the throttle is released at which point the light goes out and the squeal disappears. If throttle is again applied, the simptoms progressively return. I have previously trawled through many of this site's user reports until yesterday I spotted this one which I now think is the cause and its solution. You will see that the moderator has flagged this as a common problem, so hope that I am correct and that it also assists in your solution.
Anyhow, I have yet to do something about it so let us know how you get on.

Re: Whistling ducato

I have had a Chrysler Voyager with a "whistling turbo" and took it in but was told some turbo`s do whistle some don`t, it ran for 3 years and was never a problem. My current 03 2.8JTD has an annoying noise when pulling uphill around from 55MPH in 5th and equivalent in 4th gear. I can only describe it as a sort of gurgling sound not very loud but irritating. Complained to dealer /Fiat but never resolved it, other than the sound it has never been a problem, I understand these noises do occur in various guises if unlucky.

Thanks guys
Decided to leave it for now, no noticeable loss of performance so will see what happens.

Re: Whistling ducato

Might be some use, but recently I drove a 05 VW Transporter which had similar symptoms as the above except it lost a lot of power - it was brought back to VW who replaced the whole throttle unit as a pipe had a hole in it somewhere in the system causing the noise and lack of power.

Re: Whistling ducato

Hi all
Having checked everything else it seems the link provided by beekay has the answer, does anyone else know anything about the wiring problem on the throttle sensor?
