My 2004 1.9 JTD has developed a problem when starting. The engine turns over for ages before finally starting. The battery and starter motor have been checked and it was also recently serviced where the fuel filter was changed. Once started the car runs fine but I know somethings wrong here.

A friend suggested it could be the diesel lift pump. Anyone have any ideas or similar problems? Many thanks. :)

Hello Lee and a big welcome to the forum :)

Does the problem only occur when the engine is cold? If so, check out the glow plugs as they could be at fault. It could indeed be the pump that's at problem, may also be worth a look, but also check those glow plugs as these cause the majority of problems with Diesels starting, but not on a 2004 (more like a < 1998) so I could be wrong.

Maybe someone else will have another suggestion :)

I would agree with Ozzie try the glow plugs, but having said that in the warm weather we've been having lately I wouldn't have thought a lack of glow plugs would be a problem.

Yeah, as Doblo said you shouldn't have too many problems in this weather, although it was cold over here in Wales this morning :p and some cars windows were condensated!

Are you having any warning lights? Like flashing glow plug light, as this doesn't always mean there's a problem with the glow plugs, it's there though to tell you something is wrong!

Looking further into detail, you haven't run down the fuel lately that could have picked up something to semi-block the feeding pipe?

My friend once had a smilar problem with his car though which made me think of it, it would turn over fine but not start but after a while it would start (later to be found to be come debris in the tank) and it had blocked the fuel but once the pump started to suck the fuel up it dislodged the debris and fell back into the tank and would run fine again for days! :)

And as for the warranty... :p Just ask Niall :D

Thanks for your help. I don't think the glow plugs are at fault because the problem is worse when the engine warm, it sounds more like fuel starvation when starting. As for the warranty if your over 60000 miles forget it! As I found to my cost (best part of £1500) when the gearbox, clutch and clutch master cylinder went within weeks of the car turning two years old! I'll probably get the dealer to check it out but it can wait untill after my holidays, I can't afford their prices at the moment!!

tell the garage to check the solenoid vacume control valve for the anti run on butterfly in the inlet tract as if this valve fails ie leaks it suplies vacum and shuts the run on butterfly depriving the engine of air giving the impresion of fuel starvation

this does not have a fault code in the ecu but by starving the engine oif air
can bring up other faults such as air flow meter egr or boost presure

Did anyone ever solve this ? Got the same issue at the moment with my 2008 Doblo... Replaced Crank sensor and not solved it. :(

The JTD Was used in punto.. and bravo/a

Should be more up to date threads over there ;)

Have you had the rail pressures read?

That will be ideal..as it wont inject until pressure is met.

TOWING.. bunp starting.. will taise engine rpm enough to boost rail pressure

So if it 'fires' instantly with a tow @1200 rpm.. than cranking at @ 600

You have a place to start :)
