My dad has just informed me that his 2004 (54) 1.3 MJet Doblo has developed this smell.

Just arrived home from holls, towing a small trailler tent / camper and the vehicle is allowing exhaust gasses into the cabin. The engine is also producing a rattling sound, similar to 'Bad' tappets.

Looking within the engine bay, it is clear that exhaust gases are visible and appears to be coming from the air cleaner box and close to the EGR valve.

My own personal thoughts are that this is an EGR problem, although he has not complained about any loss of power (unreliable as he doesnt drive progressively at all), nor are there any warning lights displayed.

Car was purchased new and is anually serviced, and has only 43,000 miles, only does short journeys etc. Oh one last thing, he uses super-market fuel.

Any thoughts guys ?

Cheers
David

My first thought is to check all of the pipework leading to and from the egr for leaks or loose fitting. It's unlikely to be coming from the air filter box as this is the inlet side.

Is this the same car as in the issue posted by sigwx? Odd coincidence if not!

Yes you need to get the EGR valve checked. Its unlikely that is what is causing the rattling though
