Technical Headlight switch/flasher

sprayed mine under the rubber with contact cleaner today as the same problem with my DOBLO has occured. Mine is just a month out of warranty. Took it to garage and the FIAT dealer quoted £184.00!

A little spray and high beam and flasher are as good as new. THANK YOU guys for the tip and for saving me loads of money. I am truly grateful!

sincerely

I picked up my (new to me) 55 plate 105 Multijet on the 18th of November, and my car also has the iffy lights.

The first time I switched from dipped to main, the dipped went off, leaving a spotlight effect for main. Then it was ok a few times. Then the next time I used it the whole lot went off.

It has now gone off a few times.

Other times it behaves perfectly.

I spoke to our local Fiat dealer and they confirmed it is a problem they have seen a few times, and it sounds like a new switcher unit is required.

Fortunately I think it will be resolved ok without cost to me by the dealership I bought from. They are liaising with my local Fiat dealer, and it goes in for diagnostics next week.

The only concern I have is as it is an intermittent type fault, will they pick it up ok?

As a point of interest, has anybody noticed a lot of the vehicles posted are 05 05 55 plates?

Yep mines an O5 also same problem, I posted a while back about taking the airbag module off, to get the wheel off , to get at the switch, is there a trick?? maybe it requires special tools that justfy £184.00 I dont know

I don't have this problem but I want to get at the right hand stalk switches. Does anyone know how you remove the front column trim cover? Does the steering wheel have to come off?

Hi Fido
read my post once the air bag and wheel are off the covers are easy

I'm sure there is something here about sorting this with a squirt of WD40 or something. Better take a look before you take your car apart.

Yes you can pull the rubber up the stalk and get the WD40 right inside the switch just a squirt is all you need, lets see how long it lasts or what other issues it produces, but for me it has worked fine for now

so a garage should strip down the controls to access the wiring connectors & test the output(s) for free, then go out of business as making no money then customers complain on FF there are no dealers near them:confused: Admit £50 is excessive.

Surprised that no ones been killed because of this. It should be a legal requirment that these sort of items are built to give a reasonable lifetime of service which the flasher doesnt by todays standards imo.
I would have thought that knowingly building a car with parts of dubios reliability will one day be an offence not just offensive.
I say this because mine has started and its frightening.
maybe its done to give the garage work.
I will never have work done on mine by a fiat garage. Total rip off.
Sorry mr mod but if the parts crap then the garage should foot the diagniostics cost which is also a joke.
No good gettin upset over fiats standards lol/ Without predjudice of course.
Must add that I must have had 17 cars in my life and never had this problem at all. 21st century and it all goes t-ts up:slayer:

totoly agree i am having the same troble with mine, 2006 with 30k on the clock. use the main beam very rerly but on the weekend when i did i got a nastey shock. this is just fiat puting cheap ass switches whitch are not built to last so there dealers can literly rob you for the best part of £200 not happy as the resistor as been replaced 2 times in 18 mounth first time under warranty secont time out my own pocket apart from that i love my doblo:slayer:
wish someting as changing the switch or stalk was no so exspensive(n)

My headlight flasher on the Doblo became intermittent and now is not working at all. The full beam selection is also not working. Is it possible to strip the switch down, or is it a new switch, or could the problem be elsewhere?

Dobbin
Do try the wd40 trick! I had exactly your symptons and it worked for me.

I wouldn't recommend using WD40 as it is intended as a water dispersant.
It is also designed to leave a residue to prevent further water ingress. This residue may, in time, affect the contacts. much better to use a proprietry contact cleaner.

I used contact cleaner on mine. Took about 15 seconds and everything still works. (I know I'm going to regret saying that).

Hello, yes i have the same problem to and i guess i have to live with it... Just a month after i purchased my doblo in 2004 i was driving and flicked the bright to beam and all my front lights went off.. i was terrified.... i went to the agent the very next day and we booked the van to get it surveyed and the whole switch was changed ... for free ...since i was still under the warranty but the problem occured in the later years... i managed to change it another time but had to pay for the labour and that was 50.00 euros.. Now it is in a desperate need to be changed again but my Fiat dealer refused to change it.. The part cost 170.00 euros here and the labour cost is another 50.00... so i am still thinking of getting it done... it seems to be a factory defect but my fiat dealer would not give in..
I know someone who has modified the system but i am not sure how it works since he does not want to disclose how he modified it..

Strange thing is, my bus is based on the ducatto & it uses identical parts on the dash (switches for indicator, wiper, lights, flash etc) and yet I haven't had any problems with it

If the switch fitting is the same size, same fixing point etc, I wonder if this could be a good replacement.
The doblo is made in turkey, any ideas where the ducatto is made? And do all the switches come out of the same factory?
It might be interesting if doblo switches are made under license in one country whilst other, seemingly identical switches, are made elsewhere?

I have been looking at this thread as i have the same problem on my Doblo. I shall try the contact cleaner tip first but can anyone tell me if the steering wheel needs to be removed in order to remove the stalk, there seems to be no answer when 'fido' asked that question. I have removed the main front cover and will leave it off for the time being to see if the contact cleaner tip works but would like to know about removing the stalk completely if needs be.

There's one for sale on ebay & it looks to be a complete unit which would have to be slipped off as a whole.
interestingly, the doblo switches look identical to the punto mk2 switches on ebay but the ducatto look like the grande punto.
BTW, I bought my contact cleaner from Maplins, gave the switch a jolly good dousing (using the extension tube on the can to get behind the rubber flap) a couple of years ago and still not had a recurrance.
