Right so I've just been having a quick fiddle with my head (ooo er). Right so anyway here it is....

So here's what I shall be needing for it....
  • Cam Cover Seal
  • Set of Manifold Bolts
  • Probably Spacers for the 866 cam
  • Head Bolts
  • Head Gasket Set
  • Thermostat
  • 2 Cam Cover Bolts (I'll acquire some for free)
I will also get...
  • New Ignition Coils
  • Cambelt Set
And I think that's all I shall be needing. I'm going to paint the cylinder head and cam cover in black, i might also put some kind of logo on the cam cover, not sure yet though.

Initial Problem:
I can't turn the existing 1108 cam past more than about 45 degrees, so how the hell am i going to measure the valve clearances
Also the metal bit in the cam cover is a bit rusty, but I don't think that's much of a problem.

the cam that is in there is not set up at all. i can't even say if its tightened down properly. it was put in there to store cos i didnt need it!

the inside of the cam cover has a rust specs on it, its not a problem - its because i cleaned it all up to stop it dripping oil all over the show. clean it down with a green kitchen scouring pad or something and smear a bit of oil on it, it'll be reet.

was i right then? lol :)

and cambelt/crank etc have alot more force with engine running than you can apply i'd assume? (not insulting you here btw lol) :)

I don't know, been told off for turning it, haven't read the haynes and will leave it for tomorrow, busy with tea and such like before work :)

Yes the crank will apply more force than me :p

Right a bit of Hayne's reading has left me thoroughly confused!
For one it has no actual camshaft removal part for the F.I.R.E engine  so I don't know how to know the camshaft is secured properly.
Also it mention's a camshaft oil feed pipe and I have nothing it shows as being the camshaft oile feed pipe that looks like that
I'm too confused, shall figure it all out tomorrow I think when I don't have to think about work.

Removing the plugs is only needed when the head is on the block to relieve pressure, but as you have only a head, then no need.

The reason it may be hard to turn is, as Arc suggests, if the cam caps are not tight then the cam may not be in the bearing surface properly, so i suggest you remove the caps and check very very carefully that the caps have not scored the cam at all, the edges are razor sharp and can damage the bearing face.

As for removing the cam, try Haynes, section 2B for OHC engine in car repair, or 2C for removal and overhaul, its all in there and with pictures of the oil feed pipe too.

thats true  sorry about that mate, i never actually checked - i wonder if its at the engine builders, or if my head didnt have one and when they swapped the cam over :s

lol, just about to post that as well, at least someone noticed or it could have been a disaster lol.

Why does the thread mention GSR? has it already been worked?

You will also need a valve spring compressor as well won't you? May as well do the valse steam seals as they are in the HG kit.
