Hi all,Maybe one for the Punto section but I have been offered a running MK2 Punto Engine for scrap money,i have already got a mk1 ecu and modified loom as I was planning to go for a mk1 engine. As far as ive worked out is it just the inlet manifold, throttle body and cable that need to be changed to mk1 mechanical type to get it to run or is there more?
Thanks Guys :)

Main issues you will find between the mk1 and mk2 16v engines are the exhaust manifold stud patterns are different, also some of them do not have the water temp sensor hole machined into the side of the cylinder head with no option to directly drill to that size

Is that a later/earlier sort of think whitz or is it just a random decision at the factory? :p

Differences off the top of my head (i mixed and matched a mk2...well Stilo 1.2 16v with a Mk1 engine)

The bottom end is, as far as i know, identical, though the crank sensor may be in a different configuration on the pulley depending on the year.

The head is different for the exhaust studs

The (early at least) Mk1 head also has double valve springs, mk2 does not.

Mk1 has "spicier" cams i think, perhaps same or very similar to what the later 1.4 16v has? (somebody may correct me on that)

Mk2 has cam sensor, can be ignored.

There is also a difference in setup of coils, so you'd need to swap the coil packs to mk1 spec (basically you can use 8v/cento coils in the mk1 bracket)

Mk1
Different stud pattern on exhaust.
Half alloy half plastic intake manifold.
Block is almost like the 8v block but has a brace across the mains.
The con rods are heavy cast iron jobs.
The gudgeon pin is smaller.
The head has double valve springs.
No cam sensor provision.
Coil pack is twin setup like the cento.
The cams are higher lift and over lap then any other 16v cams I've checked.

Mk2
All plastic manifold.
Single spring valves.
Single coil pack
Block is half alloy and the mains caps are machined into them.
The rods are powered metal with larger gudgeon pins.

Hi there, hope this is an appropriate question for this thread but is there any mk2 head that came with a temp sensor bolted to it? and if not, how do you get around this if you put a mk2 engine in a mk1?
Thanks

you could use a stat off a later car, one that has the temp sender on the stat housing, not sure which cars have them but have a browse in the eper.. think stilo, grande punto era without looking myself.

Cool I was actually thinking that but was also worried it may give a different reading as it looks like its on the cooler side of the thermostat. Probably no difference that close to the block. Cheers, Daniel
