Hello fellow 'Fiat Freaks'

Just replaced the front pads on my 146,000 km Seciento Van out here in Spain.

The job and the replacement pads were, as you are probably all aware(for those that have done this job) a breeze to fit..

However, my previous oads were very well worn with only 2-3 mm left on them and the pistons were obviously well exposed.

Now when I drive the car brakes a lot better(as you'd expect) but unfortunately I have the odd brake squeal when driving straight, at speed, slowly and when going around corners etc.

The new pads came with a 'pad' on the piston side to 'mitigate' brake squeal(I think thats what is for) and I would usually put some copper slip on that to help prevent it but can't find any supplier of that here...

Anyone know if there is another product I can put on there???

The brake disc, although worn with a lip was in good condition but reading through the archives I see that the pad can sometimes catch on this lip...

Anyway, a breeze to change(compared to my old 'Pug' 106....)

The brakes don't 'bind' but the right hand wheel does get a bit warm, maybe that will ease of over time. Unfortunately I ran out of brake cleaner after doing the nearside calliper so maybe thats why the offside is making the noise(I think) and getting warm...

Any suggestions??

file the lip off the disc, did you rememeber to put the squeak plates back in (easily forgetten). If you don't use copper slip then some silicone based grease will do.

I would remove the slide pins and check them for any rust, clean them up with some very fine grade wet&dry if there is and re-lube them - you actually need to use silicone grease for this and not just general grease, silicone grease won't perish, or absorb into the rubber which alot of greases will.

Hi there

Thanks for the advice.

There is isn't any rust at all on any of the components, they are almost as they must have been when they left the factory(I am in southern Spain) just a little bit of brake dust etc that formed as 'crust' on the exposed part of the piston.

Squeal plates? I just lifted the calliper up and did a 'one for one' swop with the new pads. Do you mean the 'spring loaded' retainer that sits in the calliper? Thats all there. Pretty good nick TBH.

I attach a random photo of 'Noddy'!!

been a while since i had stock cento brakes to be honest, can't remember if they have the plate or spring type retainers that stop the brakes squeaking like hell. But sounds like its not that ;)

And i do love a white cento!! :yum:

'Noddy' is brilliant...and he is a 'Van' so no rear seats just a cage and loads of loadspace for 'man things'(tools/big dogs etc)

They are sought after here. Many tradesmen use them and one like 'Noddy' was for sale just up the road, same year, colour, spec with 250,000km on it for €2,500-00....

CRAZY..

'Noddy' used to belong to a mate of mine(he has a car/boat/plane polishing business) so I got him for 'buttons'. He has 'swam' a flooded river(carpets in passenger footwell have been 'cut out') but other than a couple of minor dents is 100%.

My business partner was driving 'Noddy' in Marbella and was 'T' boned by an ITALIAN driving a Mercedes...

That has been fixed now but 'Noddy' just brushed himself off and kept going.

The Italian bloke had the TEMERITY to say 'I know these cars, they are 'cheap'.

My mate, who is MASSIVE(yes and still fits into Noddy) growled at him and the Italian s@@7 his pants and called the police...

I did laugh!!
