I need some advice on gearboxes as I think mine is on the way out. Recently it's started crunching real bad into reverse and you have to really push the gear stick to get into first and second (first is worse) I would just like to know if there is any simple fixes other than getting a new gearbox?
I don't think it is the clutch as my biting point is still low

Thanks in advance :)

Don't think the bite point on the clutch should be low, in fact that sounds like it could be what's causing your problems.

actually thinking about it it is lower than when i got the car, it may just need the clutch replacing. i havnt got a clue :p

Hi Adam

The gear boxes are pretty good cept
a) if they are dry cause the drive shaft gaiters have split, if you have wet gaiters
b) if you are not using the full synthetic, when you may get some temperature variations, with chepo oil.

The clutches are terrible, they eat clutch cables, quadrants, and coupling rods, unless the clutches are new. The new clutches are light as feathers for girlies in high heels, but dont last long if you ride them in traffic or parking..

The clutches normally fail with a bang and you need to walk.

i havnt got any of those problems with it :p its just the reverse crunch and wont go in first and second easily :p

Lets back up a bit...

Which gearbox do you have, wet or dry shaft?

If its dry, its probably clutch related, could be adjustment, could be wear. adjust first.

If its wet, check the oil level, then look at the clutch as above.

You should never have to force it into gear, doing so damages the hubs, so rectify now before you get an even bigger bill

Cheers

not sure what it is but i have a 1998 sei sporting il have to inspect on friday :)

aaaah yes pep0 i have just read the adjustment guide and it does sound like the right fix, the cable is real loose where it attaches to the gearbox im guessing that is what you adjust :p

Hi

You probably have a dry shaft box, but Id still check the level, filler plug out and little pink finger in if it comes out clean add oil... If you dont have a service history and the auto is high mileage drain and replace costs a fotune for the full synthetic

You adjjust the cable from inside the engine compartment and then check the level the pedal is at inside the auto, you keep foot off the pedal all the time.

When I adjusted mine a few weeks back I found the biting point moved slightly upwards after a few turns but I couldn't see a difference of the pedal height. It solved the exact problems you're having. Was alot of trial and error, adjusting the white nut then driving backwards and forwards a few times, repeating until it was where I wanted it.

Just yesterday I found it started grinding into reverse and being stiff into 1st and 2nd again but today its seems to have sorted itself out

EDIT: I have a sporting, I can change into reverse as fast as I like and it doesn't crunch.

I just adjusted it and its sorted thanks for all your help! Think a new clutch and cable will be in order though as I don't know how long this clutch has been on for.

One last thing is there a guide for the 1.1 or is the 0.9 pretty much the same for clutch replacement ?

Hi Adam

https://www.fiatforum.com/cinquecen...utch-cinquecento-sporting-1-1-ohc-engine.html

Which auto do you have again?

You need axle stands, trolley jack, and mate or gfriend, box of inspection gloves, pentane/butane blow torch and several cans of plus gas, if you undo strut bottom bolts you can unplug the inner shafts from the box, and tie them up.

Haynes manual might help as well, Halfords normally have them for Cinq same engine & gear box.

The problem with the clutch is the thrust bearing seizes and the thrust bearing face eats the tines(fingers) of the clutch diaphram spring, it can wear the fingers down until it penetrates the diaphram and freezes the clutch, when you need a tow. If you merely snap a cable it is possible to drive home home with care.

My clutch was light no problems squeaked one day did another mile and went bang. If you do the clutch replace the cable and the plastic pivot.

Hi all. I'm new here and spotted this thread hoping I might solve a problem that looks similar.
I have a seicento.
The car was fine yesterday but this evening my son went out in it and drove around for an hour and all was fine until the gears wouldn't engage,
He managed to get home somehow.
Anyway, I got in the car. Started it and tried to put it in first. Clutch felt normal pressure but first gear just wouldn't go in. Then tried reverse gear slowly because I suspected clutch was maybe gone. Heard the gears grind as I tried to engage reverse so quickly abandoned that idea.
Then I cut the engine, put it in first with clutch depressed and started the engine. Started fine with car remaining stationary. Then I slowly raised clutch and car moved away normally but when I tried to move into second gear I felt resistance and it just wouldn't go into second. Stopped the car and cut the engine. Tried the same procedure but this time started in reverse gear and again it was fine. Clutch seemed to operate ok only if I do the above. Just won't engage when I depress the clutch and try to engage any gear when the engine is in tick over.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

there is a guide for adjusting the clutch it is referenced earlier on this thread but sounds like the cable is failing the clutch may beas well
