well top dead centre of the crank is with the piston at the top on cylinder one. so if you have the head off. turn the crank so that the piston in cylinder 1 is at the point where it stops for a moment before going back down. the cam pulley should have a mark. if not do it to the point where both valves on cylinder 1 are closed

crank has a mark on it that lines up to the top of a casting on the rear of the engine, take the alternator pully off and it will be obvious!

im sure the cam has a similar thing

Aye, not the whole box ming, that would be a pain lol.

I just put a long screwdriver in the sparkplug hole and ull see him go up when u turn the pulley :D thats how i found it.. old school but works for me (y)

The chopstick method will be safe enough in an 8v (but remember that the plug hole is at an angle). Safest way (assuming the cam cover is off, is both valves shut (lobes pointing skyward) on No.1 cylinder. This gives you TDC on compression stroke on No.1. As the cam pulley is keyed, it can't be out relative to the cam unless someone snapped the key off.........

my old key had snapped on the old camwheel, but we replaced it so this is not the issue.
also, we checked the key earlier and its all intact, so that couldnt have moved.

tried timing the car up about 12 times now, both tdc marks lined up perfectly, yet whenever i try and start the engine it is misfiring and backfiring, like it is out of time?

anyone else had problems like this?

theyre definately lined up in the right places against the marks, im just rather confused now... :(
