I'm new to Fiats and to turbo engines so have no idea what they should normally sound like. I have just bought a bravo 1.6 mjet 09. when I accelerate I can hear what I assume is the turbo starting, it is a high pitched whirring noise but it continues when I am not accelerating and just maintaining speed from approx 35 to 70mph. The noise is not very loud but just audible, is this a normal engine noise for this car? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am considering taking it back to the garage.

Yes this is normal. A turbo is always spinning when you're driving and have the car on. However whenever you have your foot on the accelerator it will suck air in and feed it to the engine, at which point it will be audible. So it should disappear when you have your foot off the accelerator.

yeah sounds normal, my turbo when accelerating and changing gear i would hear a swooisssssssh sound lol

Thanks for your quick replies I can now enjoy driving my car :)

Sorry, ignore the posts above. If you are getting a high pitched noise when not accelerating, then it could well be something else. Can you record the sound and post a link on here? Does it happen in all gears or just specific ones?

Turbo noise should only be present when the throttle is pressed, though you may get a small "whoosh" sound when you lift off.

Basically what I said, but okay. He does make it sound as if it is only when he has his foot on the throttle. But I do agree that he should record the sound, so we can hear.
