Hi everyone,

could anybody help solve the problem with my girlfriends Brava?
It's a 2001 1.2 80 Sx with the 188A5.000 engine.
When driving along then braking, as the revs drop the engine cuts out, the engine management light comes on. It stays on after re-starting, but goes off sometimes, then it all starts again.
I did notice that the amber fuel light came on when it cut although the sender is still showing the tank as third full which it is.
The fuel light did go back off again a short time after.
Trouble is it did not do it all day when a mechanic friend had it, yet it did it twice when i took it too him.
He took it to have the codes read and said it had several stored which were cleared.
We noticed the engine was running a little bit cooler after the codes were cleared.
It was ok for another day then the problem started again.
Took it back for another read and was told it was probably the MAP sensor???
It had new HT leads a few weeks ago for a misfire, one of the tubes had a minute hole in it and was shorting, noticed the lead box was marked 16v Punto.
Also it passed its MOT only two days before it started to cut out.
Also it has a K+N panel air filter and was told this might be the cause, oil particles going into the throttle body??
It runs fine when your moving and idleing, it does idle lumpy when the light is on though.
Any ideas???

Many thanks,
Dave.

the mk2 punto 1.2 16v sporting uses the same engine, they are easier to find for spares, and it explains why you saw punto 16v on the coil pack. it simply means someone has replaced it with one from a punto in the past. that is not a problem. you should remember this when looking for spares ;)

first thing that springs to mind is a well oiled k&n has allowed oil to contaminate the MAF which has caused it to fail. dont oil your filter in future, we dont have a dusty enough climate to require it anyway. you can replace it easily enough with a scrapyard sensor (£5). it is fitten on the intake manifold as shown in the attached image below.

by the way, on this model the MAF is actually an intake air pressure and temperature sensor. both are built into one sensor.

you can test yours before replacing it if you wish. the attached image shows which pins to use (1&2) and what resistance to expect at a range of temperatures. if you need any further clarification just ask.

Thanks for your reply Jug.
Sorry i meant the cardboard box the HT leads came in was for the Punto 16v.
The K+N was new, put on about 7 months ago and was quite oily, although they do dry up as time go's on.
Good job i mentioned it, it does make sense though.
I'm going to take the air feeder off and see how dirty it is around the inlet etc.
The pin test info and the sensors location is just what i need, excellent !!
If it does'nt cure it at least it will narrow it down.
All the best,
Dave.
