Hi all,

A friend of mine has a problem with his Bravo 2.0 20V, year 1999.
Sometimes the car runs normal but when it doesn't it revs around 2000 RPM at idle, runs very rich and lights up the injector symbol on the dashboard.
It also doesn't accept throttle at all until half pressed when it starts behaving badly.
Any ideas?

Cheers,

N.

If it lights up the injetor light, reading codes will tell why it is doing so, propably some sensor dying.
As usual suspect on these engines is the MAF, try and disconnect it above the battery.
Another guess is lambda dying and overfueling it. On full throttle the control goes to openloop map instead of closed loop lambda correction.
Is it a 147 or 155? Shouldnt matter, but just asking (ICV causing erradic idle / the electronic throttle).

Thanks for the reply.
Here's what FiatEcuScan says:

ECU programming date: 12/24/1997

1: P0100 - Air flow meter

Also had these at some point:

1: P0110 - Air temperature sensor
2: P0100 - Air flow meter
3: P0135 - Lambda sensor heater

The car has been seriously tampered with. ECU has probably been reprogrammed and tuned. Pin 48 on the right header has been soldered on, the pinout says it's a signal from relay. (pic attached)
MAF shows between 10 and 33 kg/h, depending on throttle. The connector has been cut at some point of time and I'm not sure it has been rewired correctly. If someone could look at his/hers Bravo and share wire colors position I would really appreciate it.

One more thing, the throttle position motor makes a bad wining noise when switched on, like it's stuck at some position.

Whining noise? its a 155 then :), nothing to worry about the noise if it like buzzing.

P0110 - Air temperature sensor
P0100 - Air flow meter
These two stay in error memory if the MAF has been disconnected.
Seems like P0100 is on all the time?
MAF propably dead then...had 180k (1999 Marea 155, same engine as mk2 HGT) on mine and cleaning didnt work anymore, so ordered new bosch one from italy for 100e.
Lambda sensor heater? maybe dead lambda too, would explaing the runnin rich part.
For the idle...no idea, you could take the hoses off before the thottle plate and when engine is running. Have someone to press gas to up the revs and move the plate.
As before, tried disconnecting MAF when it starts behaving?
Also could try disconnecting the lambda.
Engine will run in limpmode, but if it sorts the runnig rich, you got the culpirt.

According to wiring diagrams, pin48 is power for injecetion on one connector, its nowhere near the edge, so lets assume its either:
ConnB-Pin2 - heated lambda sensor- heater element- downstream of Cat
ConnB-Pin60 - heated lambda sensor- sensor- downstream of Cat
ConnB-Pin59 - RPM sensors (impropable)
ConnA-Pin2 - Nothing
ConnA-Pin63 - Airflow Meter / Acceleration sensor
(took the pins at the edge of connectors from diagram)
It looks like its just repaired due to bad contact?

Here is pic from my MAF, should be same wiring as its same engine (182.B7) but colours seem different, Injection unit is same (Bosch M3.1).

Ok ignore the ConnB-Pin2/59/60 on above post, looked at wrong version (the 150).
And ignore the "Acceleration sensor" no such thing on 155.
Also looking at the right diagram gives following order for maf:
Green-black, White-red, Grey-blue, White-orange, Grey

Update:

Car got stable after sorting out a chassis grounding issue.
Not all problems were gone for good but since the car has been heavily tampered with I'd say it runs ok for its state and age.
