I have a 1.3 fiat brava 80 16v formula

the problem i have is the engine control system failure light has just come on was not speeding just turning a corner then i started to kangaroo jump so i pulled over and the EOBD light was on.

Any ideas how i can sort this problem out asap please as i rely on my car for mobility.

Many thanks

get the code read, or buy yourself a code reader.

Dealer cost about £30 per read.

Other garages will be a lot less.

A PC USB reader which also has lots of other features is about £80-90.

Does it still run?

Where about are you? -- oopsss Lancashire. Not near me then :D

it sounds like a misfire has started.
check for a spark on all 4 sparkplugs, simple ignition problems are often the cause of misfires, especially if the plugs and leads have not been changed in line with the service schedule. if you have no spark on one plug it suggests a lead is faulty. if you have no spark on 2 plugs then it suggests the coil pack is faulty.

also check the coolant level as head gasket failure is common on the 1242cc engine and cna lead to misfire.

if you cant find anything wrong then you'll need to get the code(s) read from the ecu. when it illuminates the light it emans a fault code should be stored, and thats the best clue to identify the problem. unfortunately its not cheap so a thorough investigation by yourself is a good starting point.

What year is the car? If it is before 2000 you have a 3pin diagnostic socket and is in the engine bay near the top of the absorber. If it is after 2000 you are going to have a 16pin diagnostic socket under the fuse box (That for the history). The problem you are saying can be several things that causes the problem, so for not trying to find anything in blind go a have a diagnostic check and you are going to know the exact problem from your car! I hope you to find it!!(y)

Thanks all for your help

So far i have booked it in for a test only get me in next week(but its a start)

I checked there was no loose wires or anything loose oil, coolant, water, power steerin fluid all spot on.

Went to check this morning and its started and drove perfect the light stayed on so i took the battery off for 20mins to reset it it and so far so good.

still going next week for a test tho better safe than sorry

Try STP injector cleaner. Should do the trick. If you have been driving on red...then Im guessing you must have a lot of c**p from your fuel tank flowing through ur injectors.... I had the same issue and STP sorted it out like a charm!
