General Sort of ticking noise

General Sort of ticking noise

Well getting fed up now, I know it's only been 2 weeks but nobody knows what the noise is or where to pinpoint it exactly.

I am being kept updated most days but this is just to tell me they still have no idea :(

Ok so I called Vospers earlier to find out what was going on and to see if they were any closer to finding out what this noise was, they have finally said that it is the wheel bearing that needs replacing, now I am no expert on this but would this make a ticking sound? if so would it be after a set speed that it kicks in and would it sound mechanical? so many questions lol

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I just wish I could have got a decent recoding of it

A wheel bearing can indeed 'click' if one of the balls is or has broken up inside the bearing casing. I think it is less common on modern cars than the older types of vehicles I used to fix (original minis and the like).

It normally corresponds to the rotational speed of the wheel and can normally be heard as soon as the rotation starts though, but I hope they are correct and they have found the source.

Just seems odd that if indeed it is the wheel bearing then would it really have taken this long to figure it out and why also the need to contact Fiat? Fair enough if it is just the wheel bearing and nothing else, I will hopefully get from them proof of what work has been carried out. I think from listening to various sounds and looking at videos on YouTube of wheel bearing issues I have probably convinced myself that this is not the problem as nothing yet has been "ticking" like mine does.

Ok so today I rang Vospers again to find out what was going on with the car as I should have thought if the wheel bearing was the issue the time it has taken it should have been sorted by now.

It is NOT the problem and they have no idea what is causing it to make this ticking noise :bang: they are now waiting on a donor car to arrive but again they have no idea when this will happen. (insert a lot of expletives here)

Mightily peeved at the moment

Ok so Vospers are telling me that this noise is a characteristic of this car and the gearbox, they have had a few test vehicles and the same ticking noise happens with those as well.

Does anybody else out there have a Pop Star 1.4 with similar issues / noises?

I am not overly happy that this seems to be the outcome of this.

I am going down on Thursday to use one of the test vehicles they have.

Not sure what else I can do

Ah the old 'they all do that sir' excuse.

Tell them mine doesn't for one.

That's all well and good and I do think it doesn't sound like the most horrific fault a new car can have, but why on Earth if it's a characteristic have they kept your car for weeks to investigate?

I'd put to them that it's less of a characteristic, more that they've had the car a few weeks and because the computer doesn't say anything's wrong they basically haven't a clue where to look.

They might as well have told you this weeks ago instead of wasting everyone's time :(

I agree in that they do not have any idea on the problem, how can a wheel bearing be the initial problem and then all of a sudden it is a "characteristic" of this car. The car we used to test drive before purchase did not make this noise, not sure if something was changed with the newer version.

I can take the fact that some cars do just have certain quirks with them but a noise like this should not be one of them.

I have done another trawl through the internet and came up with an old post on here with a Punto and a clicking sound which was constant and that ended up in a replacement gearbox https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-ii/176219-punto-gearbox-drivetrain-clicking-sound.html

Will see what happens when I go down tomorrow and let you know.

So I have been down to Vospers, test driven another 1.4 engine and this one does indeed have the ticking noise as well which according to them you only get with this model  I said to him that I was amazed that nobody else has touched up on this as it is not the quietest of noises and wanted to try a different engine size to see if there was an issue with that but they did not have another demo model to try, however whilst we were out driving the other car which was literally around the block (less than 5 minutes) apparently Fiat had phoned them asking them to drain the gearbox and see if that resolved it.

Se we now have basically something that is supposedly a characteristic of this engine size yet the guy at Vospers said they still have no idea what it is and if Fiat did contact them why are they still looking into it and trying to figure out the issue

I have now driven away in a 500L twinair Lounge, which does not have any ticking sound from it.

I cannot really fault the car itself other than this issue and am contemplating on just refusing this one and getting a different engine size, but will wait and see what Vospers come back with.

One question though if anybody has a Twinair, does the car feel like it vibrates quite a lot when sat idling? this one feels quite shakey with not many miles on the clock

I still think they are bulling you. Ours now has nearly 18K miles on it at just 13 months old and it doesn't do it.

Just seems odd that the other one we test drove today was doing it as well.

I am sure they are just hoping that if they say it is as it is then we will accept it but I can honestly say that nobody would buy this car if they had this noise coming from it, we will not let it rest.

Is yours a 1.4?

Yes sorry I should have said, it's a 1.4 Pop Star manual the same as yours.

That's good to know thanks, I have almost got to the point of when out and about seeing any 500L parked up knocking on doors and asking if they get any noise, not ideal I know but the more people I can find not having this issue the better

This is the classic starjet engine right? The rough diesel-like sound is acceptable from my experience on this engine. But the engine on the previous video has some kind of metallic noise if I can hear correctly.

This is mine 95ps starjet.

Ps. After timing belt replace(and re-timing cam) the engine is much more smoother ;)

Hi what timing tools did you use for the job and is there a guide anywhere?

Hmm, I'd be tempted to go down the route of asking if you can just swap it for another 500L now. I know all cars can have faults but now they want to take the gearbox out it just seems a bit much for such a new car.

In response to the TwinAir vibrations - from driving a 500L TwinAir (briefly) and experiencing the Parents 500 hatch TwinAir 85bhp, that sounds VERY much the norm for a TwinAir! They're great little engines, but some say much more successful in the regular 500 than in the 500L. They're certainly not for everyone so get a good bit of use out of the TwinAir courtesy car and decide if it's the engine for you.

The most popular engine seems to be the 1.3 Multijet 85bhp, which will probably have a similar pace to your 1.4 16v, but does only have a 5 speed gearbox.

Thanks for confirming as such the Twinair does vibrate, wasn't sure if it was the fact that it might have just been that as it is a courtesy car that it has been driven to the pits. It does have a lot more poke to it than my 1.4 which I thought it odd being only a 900cc but the I guess they must do something to it.

May still look around for somewhere that has one for demo purposes so I can see what that would be like in comparison to this one I am driving.

I should be hearing back some time next week on the outcome of taking the gearbox out and inspecting that, if nothing found this way then I think it will be time to reconsider.

Vospers have now had the car longer than I have owned / driven it lol

Take no notice of the 900cc bit - it feels nothing like it. It's not for everyone - some people don't 'get' the offbeat idle and I wouldn't get too excited by the claimed circa 60mpg. 37-45mpg is nearer the mark in the real World. If you want really good mpg it's gotta be one of the diesels really.
