General New winter tyre thread

We have been driving on winter tyres since the late 60s when winter tyres were knobblies and in our case, with stellite studs (on an Austin 1300 Estate).
Living in Belgrade for 3 years our driving was Jugoslavija, Austria and up across Germany to UK. After driving at 60+ for a short time, the tyres would overheat and the studs come out like bullets.
Over the years we have always had a set of winters which have gradually improved to use at speeds far beyond my requiements although studs are banned in Europe except for some Scandanavian countries.
In the UK, we bought a 1.8 Astra and the Dealer offered me a set of steelies as he had several spare. They turned out to be 1.6 4 Stud, not 1.8 5 Stud.
We used this each winter to Switzerland to carry the Ski gear until I chose to finish Skiing and take the MG F is fitted with optional 16in wheels but the HandBook states that they cannot be used with Snow Chains so a set of 15s were purchased for the winters.
Last Winter, wife bought a 500C 1.2 Dualogic with an Electric Sunroof. The idea of taking it to Switzerland excites her.
A quick look at the Car and Handbook shows 185/55/R15 but shows a Black Square indicating that snow chains cannot be used with them. The column showing Winter Tyre sizes show them to be the same. Eh. No black squares are shown but surely if chains cannot be fitted to summer then noway can they be fiteed to winter tyres. A no goer for Swiss Mountain roads where a sign with a chain covered wheel means go no further without chains.
OK, it will have to be 14in with 175/65/R14. I go off to the Dealer to price 14in steelies £100+ each plus VAT. Is this possible ??
We are old customers of MyTyres . Steelie with Dunlop tyre is £75, tyre alone £46 making £29 for the wheel including VAT but £9:50 Fitting/balancing and Shipping (cheaper than the local tyre dealer to fit).
Will fly out next month and take the 500 next year..

wow thanks for telling that to me! i tried to fit chains as practice but seemed difficult so i gave up. i never realised the 15 inch tires were unsuitable for chains but now i know!

Looking at the forecasts the 500 will be wearing winters for sure by Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, looks like we're in for a week of rather cold weather which also has the potential to be snowy.

Don't say I didn't warn you ;)

Down here in Dorset I'm more concerned about being blown away than being snowed under.

Possible 70mph winds anytime during the next few hours  - the rain is lashing around the house as I type this. It's too noisy to sleep. Still 9C though, so no chance of snow.

Googling the news just now, Scotland looks desperate.

Yeah, probably about 9 degrees c here at the moment and quite windy as I think were more or less in the line of fire, but by Friday it will be getting rather chilly.

Obviously next Sunday could be completely different, but this weekend is going to be cold no matter what, just how cold we shall see. Potentially another major event like 2009/10 and 2010/11 :)

Temp has gone up a whole degree and a half in the last 10 minutes. Strange to think that we had a frost this morning and will probably have one in a couple of days again. Absolutely peeing down too so when it does get cold it's going to get icy and slippy underfoot. Can't wait to drive to Sheffield on Sunday, playing paintball in the old Stanley Tools factory :)

Woodhead pass today

So after the snow we had today and seeing a few people skid and crash on the estate where I work ive been considering winter tyres. I've seen a deal for continental ultra grip 8s with steelies for £400. Is this a good price and has anyone got any experience with these tyres? I have seen they get good reviews with auto express.

Continental don't do ultragrip 8's. I suspect you mean Goodyear. Tbh that's a far whack to pay. I'd be looking for a cheap set of steelies on ebay or from a wrecker.

Look for any 14 or 15" steel wheel from a Punto or Panda. Note that Grande Punto's, Punto Evo's and New Punto's will be Vaixhall fitment so won't work.

Where are you located?

North Wales. Look on ebay for Fiats being broken and we'll tell you if the wheels are suitable, is it for a 500?

ive got a set of goodyear ultragrip 9 and cant fault them think they were aroung 200 a set for 195/65/15. was out in both cars today mine on winters and the panda on crappy Uniroyal rainsports and the goodyears had so much more grip coming up the hill to the house in the ice and snow. only bad thing is the size of the oe wheels there tine compaired to the summer set

Thanks for you review of them :)

Yeah it's for a 500 that I'm due to get in few weeks. Thanks for your help

If it were me I'd leave it till the start of next winter. At this point in time it looks very unlikely that this winter will have a sting in its tail. That said it is a bit wintry and icy around here and being in work early today I took the Panda on winters as I've not put the winters in the 500 and probably won't do till next winter.

Yeah you are right about that! Where I work never gets gritted and becomes an ice rink but the actual roads round here never have snow on them for more than a few days. I will have a look round for steelies and other tyres. Waiting on some information from fiat then I will see if I will be getting them this year or next
