Yes, yes, I know lots of you are going to think I'm bonkers, but does anyone have experience of tow bars / towing with a Fiat 500? I'll be using the car 99% of the time for about town driving, but need to cater for the occasional camping trip or trip to the tip.

I've checked the maximum tow weight capacity and have found a lovely trailer (Erde 122) which should fit all our camping gear perfectly (we're not the kind of campers who replicate their entire house on the campsite). I don't have the car yet - ordered the a Twinair for a bit more power.

Does anybody have any recommendations for tow bars / fitting/ towing in general?

Thank you!

Can't see a issue I used to tow with a 1.2 Grande punto but it didn't like hills lol my 1.4 8v 77 bhp is much better.... Only issue I can think is the 500 is lighter...... But should be fine for camping

Be aware of course that towing a trailer comes with restrictions such as a max speed of 50 on a single carriageway governed by the national speed limit and 60mph on a dual carriageway/motorway, again unless a lower limit is in force.

You also cannot use the far outside lane of a three lane motorway.

Driving legally can there fore affect your average journey times.

If you haven't got a glass roof have you thought about a roof box which although increasing your fuel consumption (which towing a trailer will also do) does not bring any speed restrictions.

Just a thought.

To be fair its far less stressful towing steady away on the inside lane watching all the idiots fly past only to pass them when the traffic backs up also a roof box has a much lower capacity in both terms of weight and volume think the 500 is rated at 50kg incl the box and bars

Cheers yes I appreciate this Andy.

I'm just throwing it in the pot so to speak.

PS I don't get how you mange to pass them when the traffic backs up, particularly if you can't use the far outside lane. I towed a caravan for years (not with a little FIAT I should say!!) throughout the UK and France and many a time I would have been able to pass on the far outside but couldn't because I wasn't allowed to.

PPS I hadn't realised the roof weight limit was soooo low mind.

I find that in heavy traffic everyone dives for the outside lanes many times the inside lane is nearly empty. :D
