General Murphio's Meanderings

General Murphio's Meanderings

Today I was going to remove the rear springs where I thought we had established that I had omitted the metal ring which retains the top rubber. It turns out that I did fit them, so I am still puzzled that Murf tilts to one side. Everything is located properly and was tightened when under load. It seems that one spring is longer or stronger PS. I weigh about 13 stone if you were thinking it's me.
I also inflated the tyres as all had lost a bit of pressure. With such low pressures and small tyre volumes it's really hard to get just right
I was smugly thinking I could retain the patina when replacing the exhaust with one that came with the other car and looked like a new one that had been "resting" for twenty years. Examined closely it's as rusty as the one on the car
So an order will go to AG or VdL. I'm also planning a replacement sunroof as this is cracking at the edges.
Does anyone have any advice on quality. I am thinking of breaking with my traditions and getting a black and white chequerboard one

When springs sag, they do so, both under load and with no load. So if you pop them out and measure, you'll know if it's solely down to the rear springs. :)

cheers, Steve

:):):)
I'm going to live with it for now as it makes no difference to comfort:rolleyes: or handling:rolleyes: I just bounce that one.:D
My more urgent priorities will be the exhaust and sorting out a small, presumed, pushrod tube leak.

Either spring sag or location on swingarm? There's an indentation that you butt the first coil up against and this prevents the spring from turning. You should be able to check in situ

The springs were new when I restored. The first thing I checked was the locating stop, but I will double check next week....which reminds me, I did order a checker pattern sunroof :what:

Started modding eh, whatever's next. You could lower Murphio and put on some up rated springs to sort out his wonky backend:D

:):):)....I will be going further..there have been some old stock, FIAT rear mud flaps taunting me on EBay for ages. I am fed up of Murf getting a dirty bottom on his winter meanderings

I've bought them and as they're predominantly white (a bit daft you say?), there will be a bit of a thematic match with the roof.
Maybe they'll also hide his squinty rear.:D

Oh I have seen them, they have been on there for years. They have Fiat written on them. Old stock nice patina.

Have you seen the Gardiniera on there? As soon as I saw it I thought of you for some unknown reason? Bargain £9k buy it now and you even have to collect it from Malta.

Peter,
When if fitted my rear springs I noticed one side is easier to fit than the other.
If I remember correctly the ns one you can fit it in slightly the wrong position and this may make it sit slightly higher. Failing that I think it will be down to the springs. One way to check is swap them over and see if it changes the problem to the other side.
I also had to renew my exhaust as the other one had a little patina to it.

I spotted that need to rotate the spring. But I fitted them when the car was on its side, which was crazy and did make it tricky., but I wanted to drop it safely on the wheels.
Looks like further inspection is required. As always I will keep you posted on the minutiae.
Surely you could have got a couple of months out of that exhaust?:D

I've had another look at the spring and it's all properly seated...baffling.
I've made myself another challenge now the mud flaps have arrived. Whilst they are very nice, I'm not sure they are specifically for a 500. So the "fitted in 2 minutes" on the label turns out to be rubbish. A job for a quiet, sunny day. Look at the original price...I think that might have been quite expensive pre-1971.

I am too young to remember £, s & d's cough cough!!!!!!!! So they cost nearly £2 when new, that would be quite expensive!!!

Ok I maybe fibbing a bit but my main monetary concern in those days was the cost of sherbet dabs, black jacks and fruit salads!!!!!

I remember on February 15th 1971, the day after my 12th birthday, our Maths teacher explaining that school dinners, which had previously cost one and eightpence had gone up In price as they had been rounded up to 9(new) pence.
I digress from the update; new exhaust now fitted. Although the brackets were brand new 18/months ago, I replaced them because they do take a lot of heat, moisture and strain. The old ones become spares. Everything came off easily; testament to the benefit of copper grease.
The new sunroof cover came too....I'm not sure now.
