Hello!

Just an enquiry to see if anyone has swapped out the glass from one of the doors?

My driver's side window is pretty scratched up so I've got a replacement piece of glass. Just wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom, I've got an idea that both pieces of glass have to come out!? Is it best to take the whole door off of the car?

Also, on another note, am I right in thinking that my 500L should have no closing handles, it doesn't have any at the moment but a quick scan of some old photos hasn't shown any on those either?

....and finally, Marchetti passed his mot yesterday, so the registration bumph is winging it's way to the dvla today! Wehey!

Congrsts on MOT.
I think that the door pocket on the "L" is meant to serve as the door shut.
We've discussed glass when talking about the hated aluminium trims. Sliding glass on it's own shouldn't be too bad but I would think carefully how desperate the need is because it could turn into quite a fiddly affair.
The door needn't come off and but I don't think it could be done without removing the quarterlight. Scratching my head to remember if I got the glass in from the bottom, I think not but could be wrong.

I think that you will find that the 500L has small (3 piece) alloy handles as door 'pulls'. You might be able to feel the 2 threaded holes (in the door metal)---basically just either side of centre top of the door card, just under the turned-over lip that holds the top of the door card in place. If you have the door-card off, be careful, there is one plastic retaining clip at each end of the card.
If the top pivot point of the 1/4 light glass frame and the frame (the part that the glass fits into and pivots) is sound, I would try and take the glass out 'in-situ'. The (stepped) rivet is a pain to replace and if you can get away with leaving it in place, so much the better. The old glue holding the glass in place will need to be cut and 'pricked' out, but it's age may be an advantage. I used modern black windscreen glue to glue in my new glasses, and to date haven't had any problems. I was lucky when I rebuilt my 500s doors, Ann let me do them on the bed in the spare bedroom--nice and flat on a soft surface.

Silly me--Having re-read my answer I realised that you are talking about the lift glass. It does come out from the bottom, but you will have to strip most of the guides/lifting gear out first. You may them have to loosen off the 1/4 light assembly in order to fiddle the window out. It is not a difficult job, just darn fiddly and tedious. Good luck!

Thanks for the informative replies!

I think the car was close by some welding at some point as there are loads of pocks on the glass, Then I think someone may have tried to smooth it off with a stanley and has also added to the whole affair with a few streaky scratches!

So reckon I could leave the door on? I'm sure it'll make better sense once I get the door card off.

Thanks again!
Dan
