Backfiring Fuel Injected '81

When the throttle is "released" back to idle, I get burbling and a bit of what sounds like backfire (like what we tried so hard to get back in the carburetted sports car days). Engine starts and idles fine. I am 95% sure that ignition timing is correct. Plugs indicate rich mixture. Power seems a bit down. For some reason (?) the aux air regulator is not connected - the wires are twisted together and to me that makes no sense. Throttle position sensor is adjusted correctly and its connections to the ECU are OK.
This is a new purchase so that's all the history I have.
I am going to do compression test and try to confirm fuel pressure. Any other ideas ?

I don't have any experience of the north American FI setup but...

Surely the air regulator should be connected. I'd replace it. That would explain it running rich.
