I have been noticing while looking around the web at different x1/9 that the earlier versions had a amber and clear front turn indicator. Did both of the colors light up? Did the clear stay lit while the blinker was not on? I have not been able to find any picks of them lit up.

the UK versions may well have had 2 x bulbs ;

an indicator bulb - behind the orange segment,

a sidelight / running light bulb - behind the clear segment.

I'd not had much to do with the X's - but our 1981 127 had this arrangement

Not only earlier versions. Euro versions also have OLSA side light and indicator (Amber/White) mounted in bumpers. In minute 3:57 of "Totalcar: Fiat X1/9 találkozó" YouTube video you can see how these lights work.
