Panda electric power steering problems

Hi all Panda owners.

My name is Gary and I run western power steering, we have been rebuilding and reconditioning the Panda EPS steering columns for a few years now.

The Panda electric steering column is manufactured by Delphi who also make the columns fitted to the Punto and Grande Punto as well as the 500.

Generally we find the Panda column to be more reliable than the other Fiat EPS systems, we have noticed however that during the last 6 months we have seen a greater number of failures on the Panda, and I thought I would share what we are seeing on those failures as it may help members who are experiencing steering faults and are unsure as to what to do.

The faults seem to fall into 2 catagories, the most common fault and one we are seeing an increasing number of, is a vibration and groaning noise when parking, sometimes this is accompanied by the steering becoming lighter on one lock than the other, also the steering will cut out usually on a full lock and the steering failure light will illuminate. This failure is due to the torque position sensor going faulty, if this is the failure then you can replace the upper part of the steering column that contains the torque sensor without having to change the motor and ecu, you will need have the ecu recalibrated to match the new torque sensor.

The second type of failure that is less common is a sudden and intermittent failure of the EPS whereby you lose all power steering and the failure light illuminates, usually switching off and back on again will temporarily bring the power steering back to life, sometimes this can be due to other electrical problems with the vehicle such as battery, alternator and poor earths but generally this failure is due to faults within the motor/ecu, a diagnostic check will tell you what the fault is,changing the complete column is usually what is required if the fault lies within the motor/ecu.

We can offer you solutions for whatever the fault is with your Panda EPS system,if you are able to visit us we offer a free diagnostic check.

We sell a reconditioned exchange upper column that contains a new torque sensor for 190 this includes vat and delivery.
We also sell a complete reconditioned exchange column with motor/ecu and torque sensor for 219 including vat and delivery. We sell both these options as exchange units so we send you a unit first and have your old one back afterwards, this means you will not have to have your Panda off the road whilst you send your column away to be repaired.
All of our units now carry a lifetime warranty so as long as you own the car the unit is guaranteed.

We are also able to fit units in our workshop within a couple of hours for about 80.

I am always more than happy to chat to owners who have any power steering issues and advise them of the likely cost.Give me a ring on 0117-9602906.

Quite reassuring, thanks for sharing this info. Pity I'm so far away in Malta. I did have two instances where I did briefly loose power steering but this has not recurred, so I've let sleeping dogs lie so to speak !!

Almost certainly down to lack of battery power ( momentarily)

I suspect if your car was subjected to UK winters,
You'd have replaced the battery already.

FYI - there should be a stored fault code - IF the PAS lights came on..,
