Hi guys, recently got me a 1.1 ieS Uno from ebay, runs real nice, but few minor problems:

The hand brake button is inside the handbrake stick, anyone know about taking this apart and getting it to stick out? (will save my thumbs!)

Gear lever waggles a lot, goes in gear fine, and think it will just be a case of tightening the rods in the engine compartment because they waggle with it but if anyone knows much about it any help will be much appreciated. On the subject of gear sticks, it doesn't seem to have the reverse gear safety push down that i was expecting, anyone know if i can fit a gear stick with this feature to it and how?

Apart from that only other problem is leaky fuel tank, but not sure where its leaking from, look pretty rusty anyway, so i think i'll just take the one off my old 1.0 ie uno and replace it, i'm guessing the fuel pump is different (not too sure tho) but the tank should be interchangable.

Cheers,

Ali

Hi

Check that the plastic grip on the handbrake has not slid forward covering the button.
Remove all the gear linkages, not difficult, and pack grease under the seals.
Both were faults when I got my Uno and both problems were solved.

Good luck

Gear lever linkage - a bush kit is available, pretty cheap (aftermarket supplier). Most of the benefit is gained by tightening-up the fit of the gearlever in the U-shaped bracket halfway up, that provides the left-right movement by twisting the rod. Two top-hat shaped bushes (from the kit) will tighten this up well and only cost a few pounds. Also, the vertical link in the engine bay frequently becomes loose at the bottom - a few washers will again yield most of the benefit with a new spring clip fitted (from the kit).

It's the 80/20 rule - 80% of the benefit for 20% of the effort... the final 20% of the benefit (in using the rest of the kit) involves things like changing the press-on red ball sockets under the car, and the bushes in the vertical link which usually has the nut welded on top and has usually also become stepped with wear...

The gear lever should actually be very tight on the c513 (or c514 hydraulic) gear box. I'd stick to Alex' advices on this one.

The fuel tanks on these models have a weak point down under (hehe, Alex). There are splash preventers welded on the inside of the tank, with a reinforcement sqaure welded on the outside (bottom). This might corrode (especially after taking a strike) as this is just "black-steel" as it's called in Norway. One drop of rain, and it rusts. Eventually there will be a beautiful smell of RON95 where you park your car IMO. 3 bolts to change if I remember correctly. The fuel pump are the same as the 1.0. I've got a fuel pump anyway if you want one.

Cheers,

I'm afraid i never got to the bottom of the bad running, but then when it came to the MOT the car failed on excessive rust on the left sill and a little on the right. Still got it in the back garden, thinking of selling it off to someone cheap so they can fix it up (anyone interested), or it'll go to the scrap yard.

I'll try doing all that stuff to the gear linkages when i actually got a chance, uni's got me completely snowed under at the moment, works good enough at the moment anyway.

Was going to change the fuel tanks over today, but some moron in my family has lost the lever for the hydrolic jack, so can't pump the car up suitably enough to get under it, what i would give for a pit! Took the fuel pump off, think its not been fitted well enough and it leaks fuel from there when full to the top, would explain why i can fit over 42 litres in a 38 litre tank! Still would have been nice to jack up the car and have a proper good look at the tank. Oh well, give me another thing to do over the christmas hols.

Thanks again.

Right, sorted out the leaking, turned out to be 3 ports on the side of the fuel tank, no idea what they were for, but blocked them up and so far so good.
Handbrake sorted, was just the cover had slid forward.

Haven't had a chance to do the gear system yet, but i'm still wondering if its possible to fit the reverse gear inhibitor. Haynes has very little about the C514 transmission, but says that 5-speed gearbox should have it fitted, mine doesn't and i can't see on the tranmission if theres a place for it either. Anyone know how i can find out what transmission i've actually got?

Cheers,

Ali
