..heres a lesson

My hand brake never worked well, couldn't figure out why.

Reason....they are drum brakes and need to have genuine Fiat brake shoes with auto ajusters fitted.(£40)

Most brake shoes don't have 'em, especially what you buy out of Halfords etc (no discredit intended...but you know what I mean.).

Now I have a hand brake for the first time in years.:)

thats strange the auto adjuster on most cars is a seperate item to the shoes.

It is possible that the shoes bought from halfords were not the right part number...I've had things from there that wern't what they were supposed to be...get your bits from a motor factor, good shoes which should for the uno should always have adjusters fitted are about £20.

I wasn't saying it wasn't true,I was just saying its strange, I know you are right because I checked the manual and it says in there also new shoes come with new adjusters fitted.
I checked my punto manual i'm lucky puntos have normal type adjuster:) oh just remembered i've got to change mine last month:( mots on monday[xx(]

Can I just offer my input - I have a 95 Uno diesel and the handbrake is poor on that aswell. IMHO the problem is caused by the handbrake lever within the drum brake (the bit that pushes the shoes apart when you pull the handbrake up) I replaced this on both sides and the h/brake has not been a problem since - and on examination the old handbrake levers had completely siezed - i. e. when I pulled the handbrake the cable would tighten up but the lever would not expand and push the shoes onto the drums.

Hope this helps
Thomas
