hi i'm trying to find the cause of my uno turbo mk1 smoking. the engine had 81,000 and has been refreshed with new piston rings and new polished and ported head. not sure on the condition of the turbo though, i seem to let out loads of blue smoke on deceleration after its been drove hard. last time i checked the plugs they were nice and brown, will check again tomorrow. This is my second engine as a piston ring went in my last 1 and that smoked all the time. luckily found this mk1 turbo engine which had so much less wear in the bores i decided to get new rings anyhow. can any1 help thanks

IMO its your turbo that causing the smoke. 80k isn't much for an IHI they are tough little cookies but if in the past its had a bad supply of oil, quantity or quality then that would explain it.

Remove the plugs, if they are oily then it could be something to do with the rebuild and wont be the turbo

Remove the turbo elbow and see if there is an oily coating in there, i expect there is and the turbo is to blame.

i looked at the spark plugs again today and they are nice and brown no sign of oil, so it looks like the turbo is at fault and there is quite a lot of oil in the boost pipes. bit alkward to take that elbow pipe of but will do soon too verify for sure. thanks for your help

No worries.

It is a right pain getting those nuts off just take you time and get the perfect socket on them. If you have access to some gas get some heat on them and metaphorically speaking you could undo them with your fingers!

As you would have the inlet off no doubt already why not remove the turbo and the elbow from the downpipe. the turbo has the same amount of bolts and when off if found to be no good its one less thing to do.
