Hi there. Can anyone assist me in setting my Uno's timing right.

I drive a 98 Uno Mia 1100. I have just serviced it, but I have very bad feul consumption. I know that the timing is not set right. I set the timing to 10 degrees over. I know that the manual says 4 degrees over. I set it to 4 but it had no power and It was like I drived a V8. It was heavy on feul. Is there a trick to setting it or is my info wrong.

Please help!?

Could be a failed distributor diaphragm?

Firstly, the timing should be checked with the pipe to the distributor diaphragm disconnected at the distributor end, and the pipe should be blocked to stop air being drawn into the carburetor. The engine will idle very roughly at this point and try to stall.

Then the timing should be checked at approx. 900 rpm and set to approx. 4 degrees BTDC using the marks on the flywheel (viewed through the little inspection cover on the gearbox bell housing).

When the timing is set, the pipe from the carburetor to the distributor should be reconnected. The engine should idle faster and much smoother.

If the timing is set correctly but the diaphragm is shot then the car will idle badly and try to stall, and possibly give the symptoms you describe. Some people compensate for this by adjusting the timing until the engine runs smoother, but your timing will be out, which could be a cause of some of your problems.

Alternatively, if the timing is set with the pipe still connected to a working diaphragm, then the advance/ retard mechanism will operate and give an incorrect timing figure.

Search the Uno forum for 'vacuum diaphragm' as it has been covered many times before. If yours is ok, then make sure the timing is set with the pipe disconnected and plugged! Hopefully this might be the source of your problem?

Good luck!

Chas

That makes sence. Thanx for the quick reply. I ment 10 degrees in advanced. Didnt know what to call it. Ill go check it out as soon as I get of work.

I have a brother in law that thinks he knows everything about cars. He always fools around with the air\feul mixture screw. I dont know how to set that right either.

I see you are from Somerset West. Im from Warmbaths but born in Cape Town.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi. What difference does the induction kit do? Will it work better with a freeflow and branch?

I thought about doing cams and stuff on my 1100, but is it worth it? Will I really gain alot of power?

There are 4 marks to set the timing so which one do I use to set the timing
