My Lovely Uno

Take a big saw, saw the uno in half, exactly in the middle!! take the handbrake out, buy super glue put glue on both sides of the uno and push them agains eachother for 5 minutes, voila..... :) sorry... am a bit pissed about my UNO...[^]

lol bushboy there should be summet in there to do with the hand break! other than that saw it off and buy a handbreak handele that clamps onto the original shaft (so to speak) and then make sure the button still works and every thing that the only way you can do it but that means then that you hand break will be shorter than what it was to start with! but thats how i was told to do it!

gotta love the uno's

The actual thing that happens is, the handbrake handles plastic grip, slowly slides to the front over time, and especially if the handbrake is pulled with force, and if it's set to pull up too high. If it slided to the front slightly, the button will not be visable past the handle.

To push the handle/grip back, normally requires some force, grab it tightly and push it to the back end of the handbrake lever with some force and in a rotating motion. If the handle/grip is too loose, it will start sliding/moving soon with the same problem, take some epoxy then and apply some inside and push the grip back, leave it to cure fully.

I have the same problem with my button, its miles in so i have to use my finger which is a royal pain in the @ss, the wifey who had it before has covered the handle in black electrical tape, was wonderign if i take that off will i be able to get the handle on further so my button can be used by thumb again?

br4duk,
The loose handbrake lever problem can be fixed with washers and longer bolts. I know this problem well because it's happened to three of my Unos. The captive nuts crack away from the floor, yet around these nuts there is a reinforcement which you can utilise by fitting a large thick washer (say about 25-30mm diameter and 3mm thick). You will need to take the carpet out, but you won't need to weld the floor. M8 x 40mm bolts I think. The cover under the car won't fit properly afterwards, but worth it just to have a solid lever at last...

The button problem - I think I recall this as well, it's due to the end of the rod falling off the ratchet pawl, or being bent so that it doesn't engage. You will need to take the lever out in order to fix it. So, unbolt those seats and dig out the dirt in those carpet holder screws... and don't forget the hammer for those tabs in the seat rails.

I've never figured out how to remove the plastic grip, though one day it flew off the lever in an Uno I was driving and I hurt myself. Seems like it's either there for good, or loose, with nothing in between...

Cheesy_Member, that first sentence had me really confused, worthy of some dirty jokes I'm sure :) The FIAT 128 was in production for 12 years without a plastic grip on the handbrake, so I expect the Uno could probably be used like this as well. I remember that 'playground' smell of the bare steel's hard-worn patina.

i managed to remove my handbrake plastic cover! what i did was:

- take a small saw and cut through the plastic at the edges.. this will weaken it's grip a bit
- grab a piece of cloth - no slippery material - wrap it around the handle and twist like hell!! it will eventually twist off and you wouldn't even have ruined it except for a few cuts at the edges

i couldn't feel my arms for 2 days after i replaced the handbrake cover and the gear knob :p
