I think the fuel pump died on my uno today as i ran outta fuel, put £10 in a cranked it but would start there was no fuel in the lines so i took the tube off the outlet on the pump and turned the ignition but nothing came out and it didnt make a noise but i need a new one anyways as i broke the plastic tube which goes onto the pump  so the question is are they expensive and how hard are they to fit i havent got a haynes manaul so tips on how to fit would be appreciated

thanks

Ayden

my idea of the fuel pump is the thing under the back seat with 2 pipes coming out and 2 wires plugged into it ? and am i right in assuming that this is not a mechanical pump !?

Hi ayden and Welcome to the forum (y)

Sorry I’m a bit late :)

The IE Uno has an electric fuel pump. See attached for replacement (Porter Manual) -

There is a fuel pump relay mounted in the engine bay on the UK passenger side strut – behind the coil under a black plastic cover. Might be worth checking too.

Kind Regards,
Louie Bee.

yes, with ignition on,you should here the relay click and energise the fuel pump.with ignition on,check the feed to the pump.make sure you have a positive and a good negative.:)

is there a chance of knackering either the pump or the relay by trying to start the car with no fuel in coz thats what i was doing in a rush then tryin to get it started so i didnt have to push it to the petrol station :bang:

got it all out today and wired the motor up to a 12v supply . . nothing all the fues are good and the relays are good

Remove the pump completely and check the wires/connections to the motor itself. This may seem a bit awkward suggestion, but the wires CAN break over time.
Mine surely did on Citroen.

i cant believe it ! ive rang about 10 different scrap yards in portsmouth and none of them have any fuel pumps :( fiat want £120 for one  hopefully though my dad is getting one tomorow from aldershot we have to get the whole unit inc the sender unit as i broke off the nipple for the outlet pipe :bang: although we definatly know its the motor thats knackered attached another motor and it worked fine so im just praying that the scrappy man knew what we wanted :worship: otherwise i dont know what were gonna do

From my EPER it looks like the unit is the same for my 999 IE and a few 1100’s I checked – FIAT part number is 46429908. Maybe the part number stamped in the unit . If not you could both post up, or PM me the last 8 digits of your VIN numbers I'll double check for you :)

Ayden, If your going to use a second hand Unit, I’d recommend new gasket(s). on attachment 12 P/N = 7544347 at about £2.50, and perhaps 24 P/N = 5888936 at about £3 - not sure if second one is needed tbh. Last thing you want is your car smelling of Fuel ;).

the scrap man said he thought the he has is out of a 999cc same age as my one im more worried now about getting it home as its about a mile away from home and i cant keep my eye on it :( last thing i want is someone vandalising it  . it smells of fuel anyway and im sure a gasket never came off when i took it out ?

Hi ayden,

In theory, each time you loosen a gasket sealed joint you should replace the gasket as its been compressed / squashed to the designed limit, and doesn’t bounce back (so it's drummed in at work).

In practice, gaskets aren’t changed every time. For a couple of quid, I'm sure it’s worth doing on the fuel tank?

Regards,
Louie.

yea i think i will get a new one anyway for the sake of a couple of quid :p managed to get it running for a bit tonite so i know its not anything else :D

thanks for all the help guys

aaaaargh got the new pump in cars not running properly idling very rough and hard to start had to call AA out twice. went out and the AA man paid me a visit to have a look and recons that the pump weve put on hasnt got enough pressure to start the car or let it idle properly so off to get a new motor or find one that will work

A fuel pump i would say (no garantee) will set you back about £10 from the local scarp merchant, or even a new non standerd (no name one) will probably only be about £20 max. As for fitting it should be quite simple (is it injection or old school ??????) if injection its just a case of a return pipe and forward pipe, a + and - conection for the power and bobs your uncle. If its not injection then its pesssssss easy just a return and forward pipe. Hope that helpsw:slayer: :slayer:

all is ok now just replaced the motor and its all running fine

thanks for all your help
