Hi chaps, new here so please be gentle.

Just got myself an old Uno 45 Fire 5 door for £180 to run around in but the windscreen washer doesn't work even when I put fluid in it.
I've looked in my engine bay and there appears to be no way the water can get from the bottle to the front/rear jets!

Now, I have a Haynes manual but it doesn't show a picture so I need some help.

I really could do with a picture of the washer bottle area showing where the hoses go from the bottle as I appear not to have any at all!

And if I don't have any hoses, where can I get them from?

Cheers!

Hi Timm
Welcome to the forum u will find all the guys here very friendly with loads of useful advice fom experience.
Is your washer bottle like a hot water bottle or the newer style a hard plastic tank?
Either way there should be a small motor attached to the bottom with at least 2 pipes coming out along with power supply cables.
Pete

Thanks PeterG.

The washer bottle is of the solid plastic type with 2 motors at the bottom. attached to these 2 motors is about an inch of what looks like overflow pipe but I think these should have pipes attached and routed to the nozzles.

If I could just see a picture of someone's the all would become clear I think.

And do I really have to take the bonnet off to remove the bottle as it says in the Haynes manual? Sounds a bit extreme!

TS86,

Thanks for that, but the screws are inaccesible without removing the b;ack plastic grill thingy next to the windscreen :(

Does the motor work when u pull the wiper stalk mine has a tendency of playing up every now and again, just have to give it a knock while some operates the stalk.
Pete

If the motors work, have you looked inside the tank to see if the filters are blocked inside the tank?

Yep, filters are a bit gunged up and the motors work fine.

Yet, no water appears because there is nowhere for it to go from the bottle, no tubes.

I'll try and post a picture if i can get my bloody camera working

You absolutely sure?

If there's no pipes, it just leaks by default, there's no valve etc. in my experience.

My front one always got gunk inside the filter (awful design, the rear filter shape - male - was always fine). I have no idea where the 'gunk' came from but it was almost like very very wet paper. Using a bit of wire/screwdriver stopped it being gunked up and it worked for 3 months.

My pipe got damaged when I was doing work on the car and it started leaking (hence why I know without the pipe, it just empties). Maybe you could take a picture of the bottom part with the pipes and motors?

right, hope this image posting malarkey works ok.

I have circled the 2 pipes (one coming from each motor(I presume one is front and one is rear?)) and also circled another area where I believe a pipe should be to feed the rear washer. Not sure where the front pipe should go.

and this is the bigger version without markings which may be clearer.

No one?

Maybe someone can tell me the best place to Buy hose/pipes for this (In the UK)

By best I mean cheapest of course!

Any pet shop that sells tropical fish should be able to supply what they sell as "air line" tubeing.
there is two basic types, standard stuff and silicone tubeing! both should do the job! the standard stuff is a little tight and i had to dip mine in a cup of boiling water to make it soft enouth to get it on.
the silicone stuff is available in a few diffrent colours aswell.
normaly costs about 10p a foot with the silicone stuff be a bit more

I couldn't tell from your pictures where exactly the pipes should be. I have a mk1 which uses the 'hot water' style washer bag, so not really much point in taking a picture of it!

However, I also have a later mk1 solid washer bottle that looks similar to yours. The motors push into the bottom, and at the front/ underneath each motor is where the electrical connectors go to.

If you feel BEHIND each electrical connection, there should be a solid plastic pipe about 1.5cm long pointing downwards. It's to these that the flexible plastic tubing connects to for the water feed to the front and rear screen washers.

To check the front screen washer piping, find the washer jet, then see if the there is a pipe attached. If you can find it, then trace it back towards the washer bottle to see where it goes.

The rear washer pipe, from memory, comes out of the bulkhead on the passenger side of the car. Look at where the speedo cable goes into the car, and you might find a pipe going in next to it. If there is one, then that is the feed for the rear washer jet. On my car it then runs through the roof to the rear hatch.

Bear in mind mine is a mk1, but it could well be similar on a mk2.

However, on both mk1 and mk2 if you disconnect the pipes from the motors then the bottle just empties itself out. Yours are either blocked, or maybe someone has fitted blanking plugs to the motors?

Hope this helps!

Just had a another look at your picture Timm. It appears that the pipe for your rear washer is missing!

I've circled in red where it should go into the bulkhead. You can see that there is a small hole next to the speedo cable, and this is where the rear washer pipe should fix to.

The other circle shows what appears to be an 'L' pipe that should connect the motor to the hole in the bulkhead with a flexible tube.

I've no idea of your front washers as it's not clear to see. Perhaps you can try what I suggested above to locate the pipe for it.

By the way, I would suggest pulling off the 'L' pipe to see if it's blocked. If not you might find that the motor itself is gummed up from inside the washer bottle.

Perhaps your best bet is to either find another mk2 Uno to take a look at, or see if you can find one in a scrapyard to take notes from.

Best of luck, and let the forum know how you get on :)

Thanks everyone for that information. A pet shop!! I'd never have thought of that!

The front washer motor is actually just to the left of the rear one and I think it's a bonnet off job.

I'll let you know how I get on at the pet shop!

Well, I bought 2 metres of air line hose in a rather fetching luminous blue from the local aquatic centre and fitted them where I thought they should go.

Et Voila!

Working front washers!!! (y)

Thanks to everyone here for their help with this, saved me a lot of money and time.

Now, need to sort out how to do my rear brakes :)
