Well I hope you sort it, I am sure there's nothing much wrong considering it was fine the other day.

If you're bored, come up the forum to leisure lounge and introduce yourself :)

a flooded engine usually clears in a few minutes.

Mines the same engine as yours, and to start i have to have half the choke out - then turn the key and add any extra fuel using the accellerator pedal. If you have too much choke it wont start (and flood), and too little it wont start either.

It may also be worth looking at the condition of your spark plugs and leads. Coil maybe too.

yeah my bro said if it dont start by tomorrow hes gonna try clean the spark plugs and i think he said something about the distributor cap?

im not sure really altho its raining again lol so it might not start tomorrow anyway my sis said it never liked the damp tho it always started i dont know just keeping my fingers crossed now lol

she tried starting cos she had it for 3 years and knows all its little quirks but she couldnt get it going thats why we thought leave it for a couple of days she reckons its flooded cos it stinks of petrol

lol i dont even know how i flooded it i was only installing a stereo pml!

it'll flood just because as you're starting the engine, fuel is being pumped in. As the engine is not starting, its just sitting in the engine - hence the term flooding. Doesnt take too long to flood...

Yea the distributor cap and rotary arm is another thing to take a look at. You may have water and/or oil in it - which the engine will not like!

Also, just had a thought - check the vacuum advance unit is working ok. Take the pipe off the unit (the saucer looking thing on the distributor) and block the pipe with a screw or similar (so its air tight). Then try starting the engine.

The uno doesnt have an accessory position on the ignition (on our model anyway), which is why you needed to join both the red and yellow wires together as one, so teh headunit will still work with the keys out of the ignition :)

Basically, the ignition has a few positions, which turn things on at different points. EG: one click - steering lock, 2 clicks - fuel and ignition, 3rd is the starter motor. (Could be wrong on clicks but its just to demonstrate princliple).

Well on some (most) cars, they have a seperate position which turns on the cars accessories (such as teh cd players, electric windows...) without turning on the fuel and ignition (which is not good to have running when not in use). The uno unfortunately doesnt have this position, so you have to compensate by joining the continous and switched live power leads to the headunit (red and yellow wires together).

Hope that made sense :)

What he means is the uno ignition is either off, on or start where as most cars are off, 'accessory position' (as we are calling it it seems;)), on or start. You would leave the car in 'accessory position' to use the radio, cigarette lighter etc. but on the uno since you don't have this, you have to wire in the radio to work with the car on or off otherwise you could only have the radio on with the car off.

That's what I think Luke means :)

You could remove one of the other fuses and see if it works....any with same rating will do, just obviously that thing won't work, so if you remove the headlight's fuse (depending on rating) the lights won't work.

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

so me just turning on the ignition wont start my radio?

so thats y the red and yellow have to be have to be toghter for it to work

awww thank you i learned summin new today!

Hi Angeloutkast,
Welcome to the forum (y)

Now, clearing the flooding (I don't think anyone's made this really clear yet?):

- Press the accelerator pedal all the way down.

- Make sure the choke is in ('off').

- While holding the accelerator all the way down, try to start the engine. The extra airflow through the engine will help to evaporate the excess petrol from the previous failed attempts ;)

- Operate the starter in 'bursts' of five-ten seconds, leaving 20 seconds or so for things to cool a little.

- Don't pump the accelerator - keep it down. Every time you press the accelerator, it squirts in extra fuel, which will not help the cause.

- You should hear the engine trying to 'catch' - at this point, release the accelerator, pull the choke fully out, and try starting again for a few seconds (the choke ensures a high idle speed and correct mixture for starting). In the summer (which you have now), you may prefer to leave the choke in and instead press the accelerator down just a little. This is the official handbook instruction for most models! Not using the choke helps to reduce the 'excess petrol' smell you mentioned... at least the Uno gives you a simple manual control, unlike many old cars with auto chokes...

- If still no joy, check for a spark at a spark plug. Do this by pulling off the plug lead from the plug, stick in a suitably-sized screwdriver, and arrange so that the screwdriver metal shaft is sitting close to a metal part of the engine. Get someone to watch for a spark as you try to start the engine (this test works best in slightly-dark conditions).

Flooding can be a real problem - I had it after I rebuilt my engine, I was sure there was something else seriously wrong, as it persisted across several days! But after cranking with the accelerator fully-down, it cleared in about ten seconds.

You might need to recharge the battery at some time...

Please, please don't lose heart with your radio install, I'm sure the starting problems are just a coincidence and will not be repeated in the future once you have the hang of starting your mighty beast :)

Cheers,
-Alex

couldnt get that link up!
but thanks anyway

car is still dead :bang:

brother is doing something with the distrubutor cap and wd40!
guess he cant make it no worse!!
it still stinks of petrol have tried all the above it just wont start my brother said some blue dust looking stuff came out the disbutor but he cleaned it i dunno he sounded like he knew what he was doing he reckons its something to do with a celluloid (spelling?)

i been hearing "typical woman" alot lately!!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum - I stumbled across it about 6 months ago when I got my Uno, and have learned so much from the people here - its great to be able to get advice and help from people for a car that is pretty rare these days!
