Hi Angeloutkast,
Welcome to the forum
Now, clearing the flooding (I don't think anyone's made this really clear yet?):
- Press the accelerator pedal all the way down.
- Make sure the choke is in ('off').
- While holding the accelerator all the way down, try to start the engine. The extra airflow through the engine will help to evaporate the excess petrol from the previous failed attempts
- Operate the starter in 'bursts' of five-ten seconds, leaving 20 seconds or so for things to cool a little.
- Don't pump the accelerator - keep it down. Every time you press the accelerator, it squirts in extra fuel, which will not help the cause.
- You should hear the engine trying to 'catch' - at this point, release the accelerator, pull the choke fully out, and try starting again for a few seconds (the choke ensures a high idle speed and correct mixture for starting). In the summer (which you have now), you may prefer to leave the choke in and instead press the accelerator down just a little. This is the official handbook instruction for most models! Not using the choke helps to reduce the 'excess petrol' smell you mentioned... at least the Uno gives you a simple manual control, unlike many old cars with auto chokes...
- If still no joy, check for a spark at a spark plug. Do this by pulling off the plug lead from the plug, stick in a suitably-sized screwdriver, and arrange so that the screwdriver metal shaft is sitting close to a metal part of the engine. Get someone to watch for a spark as you try to start the engine (this test works best in slightly-dark conditions).
Flooding can be a real problem - I had it after I rebuilt my engine, I was sure there was something else seriously wrong, as it persisted across several days! But after cranking with the accelerator fully-down, it cleared in about ten seconds.
You might need to recharge the battery at some time...
Please, please don't lose heart with your radio install, I'm sure the starting problems are just a coincidence and will not be repeated in the future once you have the hang of starting your mighty beast
Cheers,
-Alex
