I was parking my uno up for the night when the left/right movement of the the gear change went completely sloppy. I could only select 3 & 4. Glad I was only on the drive when this happened. Anyway I looked around underneath and spotted a fixing bracket that holds one of the rods had partially snapped.

You can see the snap just where the cylinder attaches the to the bracket.

The question is, given that its not ENTIRELY broken, would this cause it to prevent selection of first and second completely

And more importantly - where the hell can I get this from, along with the rubber gator that sits along side it in the engine bay?

Many thanks for reading, please help if you can:)

Hi,

Yes, a break in this bracket would cause you to loose gears. I had the same thing happen with my Uno, the bracket cracked at two of the legs and I lost half of the gears! After removing the bracket I simply had the crack welded at an exhaust shop and reinstalled it on the car. After that I was able to select all the gears again and so far the weld has lasted over two years with no further problems.

Great - thats just what I wanted to hear. I will see if I can get it done at a local engineering works.

Regards

Bracket welded, gears now selecting correctly.

Thanks for the advice

The ball joints wear out.Cut a thread on the rods and replace them with uniball joints. There´s a guy in Switzerland who makes brand new ones out of stainless steel. The price is about 120 € , just as fiat original , but much better.
Contact me and I will ask if he can send you a set.
