Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a 1997 Fiat Uno mk2 fire 1.0L fuel injection (single point fuel injection system).

For some odd reason the car is running very rich on petrol and the smell of excess petrol can be smelt whilst driving it. It also feels very under powered. I have checked for vacuum leaks, fuel leaks, and took apart the diaphram to check if it needed to be changed but it seems ok. Could it be something related to the ECU? Can the petrol intake be regulated? I have never had this problem as my previous Uno's were all carburated and i could adjust them manually. However the ECU controlled one is a totally different story.

Has anyone ever experienced the same or similar problem? How did you manage to resolve it?

Cheers,

Jeremy

i havent yet checked the mpg as i havent had the car for long but i do know that its flooding itself with petrol as it is making a strong smell of petrol.

Hi

Do you do short journeys (ie less than 5-10 km)? I have found out that one can lose a lot of the uno economy with short journeys.
Have you checked the ignition timing? That makes a good difference. It should be set to 2 degrees with the line disconnected but closed so the intake doesn't lose the vacuum.
Another thing you can do is to clean the injector. It's very easy to remove from the body and get it cleaned. I have a home made cleaner and it worked well.

Check for broken hoses, leaking air, dead sensors.
Have a check if the fuel mix is to fat.
Half a tank is about 16 Liters so the car takes 16l/100km
I should be arround 5-7 Liters on 100 km.

do the basics first,
clean air filter, check plugs/ leads,

then check wiring to the Lampda probe/ sensor in the exhaust= THIS is what SHOULD set-up you fuelling,
if wiring looks o.k.,
unplug it and see if it runs any cleaner ( ECU will put in in average value),
if it runs better , you CAN remove the probe and clean with brake cleaner,

let us know what you find,
Charlie

so i took the car to my mechanic and apparently the carburetors diagram wasn't sealing well. Also he sprayed some carb-cleaner into the carb whilst the engine was running in order to clean the system. He also checked the single point injector and it seemed to be working well. After all this, the car was much better on petrol, ran better, wasn't weak (as it was before) and didn't emit such a strong smell of petrol.

HOWEVER

The smell of petrol could still be smelt. Not as strong, and not constant. Also it still wasn't as economical as an uno should be.
So i decided to check the petrol tank from under the back seat to see if there was a leak; and there was. Whilst the car is running, little bubbles could be seen coming out of the top of the fuel gauge housing. The top of the lid (where there are the wires for the petrol sender unit and the petrol pump) was covered in petrol and smell was excessive. That was the problem! Mechanic didnt even check this

Just to let all of you that have kindly replied to my thread know that i have found the problem. the fuel pump/gauge unit under the rear seat was cracked. Therefore when the car was started and working, little petrol bubbles where coming through the cracks creating a strong smell of petrol into the car together with the high fuel consumption.
