Technical converting carb to injection

Hi Bushboy,

Are you looking at putting the Bosch SPI on your new crabbed Uno

I’d guess it could be done – But not easily. You’d need to fit the full system including Fuel tank, fuel evaporation system, cat converter, throttle with position sensor, fuel pump relay…

The crabbed Uno Is faster – the IE Uno is cleaner.

I think the auto choke is also part of the SPI unit – as it don’t work with a duff Lambada sensor.

Hope this helps,

BTW most people tend to go the other way where they can fitting a carb in place of IE as an easy way of solving associated problems ;)

Which Uno did you get?

My MK1 carb is a lot faster than the MK2 IE - both 999 but that’s not fair MK1 lighter and has a blowing exhaust.

What’s the service history like?

Maybe its getting used to you :p or you used to the 1200 Cinq ;)

its a H reg mk2...

i know ive just dropped 200cc lol but still.. i remember the redun being faster and that was the injection. still.. aparently it hasnt been driven for 3 months until just the other day... it did seem faster just this evening after i did 100 up the M20 on the way home heh.

engine seems good but the gear box is rattly as hell.. had its day i think.

will prob give it a service myself before stanford just to make sure its as good as it can be.. might do a cam bent change too.

must tackle rust first tho...

can it be done easily? is there any advantage over either?

also, can a manual choke car be converted to auto choke?

Unless you are thinking of dropping in a 1242cc Punto Engine, I wouldn't have thought it was worth converting from carb to injection.

The carb FIRE engines apparently feel 'crisper' to drive (I wouldn't know as I've only ever had carb Unos!), but that's probably more to do with the restrictions of emissions and a catalytic converter on the SPI models.

I also agree with Dave. Most auto chokes became problematic over time, mainly in that they didn't shut off early enough causing the carb to run rich. Also, the Uno was never fitted with an auto choke as far as I'm aware, meaning that you'd have to adapt a system from another car. Not a good idea.

However, converting to injection can be done. You'd be best off finding another complete Uno with injection (quite a few rusted out mk2's with good mechanics available for peanuts), then transfer all the injection equipment to your carb Uno. You'd probably need to swap the engine bay wiring loom over at least, plus fit a cat exhaust, injection fuel tank and also things like fuel pumps/ distributors/ coils/ sensors.

I was looking into this when I was considering putting a 1242cc Punto engine into mine. Otherwise I would prefer my carb over injection any day. Much more simple, easier to work on and simply less hassle with less to go wrong.

Plus the carb models aren't stifled by the cat and ECU like the injection models were, so tend to feel a little more zippy and responsive to drive.

My advice would be to stick with the carb!

When you service it, put a new rocker/cam cover gasket as well. At the same time that will give you a chance to completely clean the cover, especially on the underside. I had *LOADS* of oil gunk on my mine. Breather tube and flange was completely blocked too.

After all new tube, flange and shiny rocker cover, I noticed an increase in torque straight away.

Spray carb spray all over the carb as well. Black stuff will come out the exhaust ;)
